Great to see individuals take it upon themselves
And risk everything to help strangers or animals!
Theres no time like the present

A man that stands for nothing....will fall for anything!

All people need to do more on every level!

I applaud them both for their efforts and coming together, but no way would I characterize them as heroic - in this instance, anyway.

The folks who've risked life and limb in this disaster are who I salute.

I don't know, leadership is very important (and often overlooked) in situations like these. Sure some are risking their lives in individual situations, but leadership is responsible for all and can result in far more lives saved. Not to mention, someone has to put those that risk their lives for others in a position to do so and succeed.

I see what you're saying and do agree on the leadership aspect - I just don't consider them heroic for this.

    ...
I think it takes a co-ordinated effort... great leadership in the command and control and great execution by the boots on the ground. Be it in a natural disaster or a war... the lack of leadership and/or a failure in the execution of a task will lead to the loss of life.

Agree %100 These two are just doing their jobs, Bush Jr. set the bar so low with Katrina that we are surprised when leaders do their job.

It's the people putting their asses on the line to save others who I would consider heroic.

Perhaps its more of a commentary on the state of Congress that there may be some heroism in two leaders from both sides who come together when their constituents need them and NOT politicize it.

It's a sad thing that that's the case....but you are right

    Yes - I don't believe politics should play a part in this. It's a human(ity) thing.

And Cosmo, I do hear you - but those boots on the ground are the ones who exemplify heroism to me.

(for some reason, I'm reminded of that Seinfeld - paraphrasing and probably horribly so..."anyone can TAKE a reservation, the key is HOLDING it")

I wonder if and hope I would have the balls to carry out such orders, to put the well-being of virtual strangers before my own. THAT, to me, is heroism.

Oh, I agree. But, when it requires such a war-operations like scale... the command and control becomes huge because those triage decisions are the ones that direct and mobilize those ground force resources to the places where the greatest risks exist.
Not saying one or the other are greater or lesser... just saying a lapse in either can turn a natural disaster into a National Tragedy.

  • Now the area is in bad shape, people standing in line for gas, diving in dumpsters for food, homeless, hungry, cold and Obama is out campaigning! HMMMMMMMMMMMM

Looking to be like Obama's Katrina to me!

Dems politicized this storm before it even hit!

Getting back to the thread's original intent...

While I'm personally proud that Mr. Unlost has been deployed with FEMA since Last Sunday, in Rockaway Beach then mostly Staten Island, I know it's easy to focus on the firefighters and police officers who risk their lives every day.

I was impressed with the convoy of power company trucks I saw driving through Massachusetts ahead of the storm, and with the local DPW workers in my little town, who were out there removing downed trees and making sure the roads stayed open. That's dangerous, hard work too.
