Need Help - Record Player/Turn-Table Set-Up

I've long been listening to my vinyl on an old record player my mom gave me.

Recently, I got a turn-table from my buddy (who's a DJ - he does techno/house/dub-step etc). It's stored in my closet so I couldn't tell you what brand it is right now.

I'm looking to start using this turn-table, but not sure what I need to buy or what the best set-up would be. The problem with doing a basic Google search for this kind of information is that everyone's got their own idea of the perfect setup.

I just want a good quality sound. I've got a pretty good turn-table. What else do I need? I have a receiver (just a basic, newer receiver). Any recommendations on smaller speakers that still kick out good sound? I'm not looking to blow a fortune, but some ideas as to what I'll need.

Can anyone tell me what I would need for a really basic set-up? I'm not very technologically-savvy, so if you could walk me through what I need specifically ("hey dummy, you need a cord" "oh thanks" ), that would be really helpful.

What do you think?

wires would be a good start. :P

you say you have a reciever? does it have a phono in? if not, i believe you need an adaptar between the turntable and reciever to up the input power to a auxillary.

as for speakers, whole lot of options. rumor is always go to the store and listen to various speakers and pick ones that sound the best to you...within your budget.

i'm too lazy to look, but back when i was looking to add a turntable, i dug around on here and found a couple of good threads. search turn table, record player, etc. they should pop up pretty quick.

Thanks! It's just one of those things that there's such a glut of information on (at least via a Google search), and everyone has an opinion as to what's best. I trust most of the vinyl heads here are looking for generally the same thing.

I just want to play my shit on my new set-up.

    Thanks again.

If your receiver does not have a phono output, you are going to need to purchase a preamp.
Then just buy some speakers that you like and you should be ready to go.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

Cool. Based on what 81 and a buddy are telling me, I just need to hook my table up to the receiver (after figuring out the phono-input --- either an adapter if needed or just plugging it in), plug the speakers into the receiver and I'm good. Anything else? If my receiver does not have a phono output, its just a matter of buying an adapter, right? Or, what would be the next step then?

    Thanks again guys.

Yeah, if no phono out on your receiver, you will need something like this. Easy to find anywhere.

Two more questions: will it say "phono out" on my receiver? The user's guide mentions "analog" but I can't find the input/output for that.

...and if I buy this adapter, I plug it into what? And then set it on "Aux" to play, right?

See? Told you I needed help. ;)

    Thanks again.

It should just say Phono, at least mine does.

Yes, the adapter should plug into an Aux input, then the pre amp hooks up to your turntable.

I recently bought a pair of Polk Audio TSi100 bookshelf speakers and am very happy with them!

I use a Spin Clean washer when cleaning several records at once and love it. Much less expensive than plug in cleaning machines and does a great job. I recommend extra drying cloths and carefully set the cleaned record in a plastic rack in front of a slow fan for thorough drying- but that's not essential:

I rock the Spin Clean as well. A solid cleaner for the price.
