Just listening to my 8/30/00 mansfield, Ma bootleg...

I was there and I didn't even notice this until I recently replayed the boot...

and struck by the following major absences which are now present in recent tours:

"Black" had no audience sing along at all..
no "I'm spinnin"..hand over to the crowd..
no "do, do, do..." part..

No sing along WHAT SO EVER on "Small town" or "Betterman"..

WOW.. that was a dark period for PJ...

Was this true of most of the US leg back in 2000?

I think there were a lot of the boots where you could not hear the crowd very well

In general in 2000, the crowd sound is much lower. That's true for most of the 2000 shows, not just that specific one. Plus I think Eddie became more comfortable with the crowd taking over around the 2003 tour.

you mean when the paid professionals sang instead of the 20000 half drunk wannabe karaoke stars?

what gets me is that we've being taking on some of the workload over the last few tours and ticket prices have gone up instead of down. what suckers we are..

    ;)
i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam

Good point. I mean, I'm all for crowd participation but sometimes Ed lets the crowd do too much singing. Keep it up and one of these days Ed won't even show up. It will just be 4 guys playing and 25,000 singing. Ick.

this is not a comment on the recording quality..

the perfromances of these classic sing along songs had NO sing along part back in 2000..

that's my only point and I found it quite a surprise given the current status of those songs..

But I think, for the most part, it IS a recording issue. I'm not sure they were miking the crowds back in 2000. If they were, it was still mixed lower.

I mean, it's not like *nobody* was singing along to Black. I'm sure everyone was. You just can't hear on the boots as much, because of the way they were recorded and mixed.

i was listening to a few of these boots the other night with headphones on, and you can clearly hear individual fans all throughout the show, but as far as the crowd as a whole... they are very quiet. i think it's a recording issue.

also, wasn't PJ playing more outdoor/ampitheaters that tour? those type of venues don't hold in the crowd noise as well as arenas. just a thought.

I think Ed didn't start letting the crowd sing entire bits and verses until after 2000. It seems like in those boots he just does the whole thing himself (I kind of like it that way, actually...).

  • i made it to the first 2 jones beach shows and the saratoga show that tour and i can say with 100% certainty, the crowd was singing along most of the night at each show.

    **edit**
the only sing along from the crowd that i like is during baba. everything else, i could do without the crowd.

why are they all half drunk? I'd bet you half of a PJ audience doesn't drink at shows at all

These boots just sound better. I was at a show and remember, at least in the TenClub section, that everyone was singing loudly.

I saw two shows in '00...considering they were coming off a such a tragedy, you knew things were askew, but they were professional and put on some great shows.

Memphis '00 is still one of my favorites.

The 2000 US leg was bound to have some hesitation and reluctance on their part.

    Just my observation.

  • That's just the way the bootlegs were recorded in 2000. The crowd noise was generally eliminated from the recordings.

And, as far as participation, it was definitely there during that tour. At the Jones Beach 2 show I was at, the place was very loud the entire night with lots of singing - especially during the "Its Okay" tag.

the best recording of the singalongs were captured on the 2006 boots.
for example the singalong on Animal in Dublin sounds incredible, really similar to how it actually sounded being there.

thats what i dont like about the 2003, 2005 & 2008 boots, they dont sound the same as a Pearl Jam show actually sounds when you attend. Too muddy & not enough low end noise, and crowd sounds out of balance.

  • Ed was overly emotional too during that version of black you specifically mentioned. I believe he slammed his mic down at the end and then for the whole solo he just crouched down on the stage and sat there and appeared to be near tears.

I guess I'm the only one that realizes this topic is not about hearing the crowd on a bootleg or even whether or not the crowd was singing along. He's talking about the lack of Eddie not singing some parts and letting the crowd completely take over. Amirite?

Talk about going off in a tangent folks...

    yes,
I am talking about Eddie's performances.. he's not leaving space / opportunity for sing alongs during the 2000 tour versions... seems odd considering what (Betterman, Black, Small town etc) have now become..
