"Recording on new stuff is on hold right now .. " .. Mike McCready

Take a listen. @7:13 of the interview. What does Jeff say @ 7:55? "First of the year or so?"

Lots of good info from Jeff here. :)

It sounded like "First of the year or so" to me too.

It is much discussed on this board, but the time between albums has been getting more and more lengthy. We're looking at album #10 being out in 2013 (hopefully). The time between Backspacer and the new album will probably end up being the longest between any two albums.

I believe the time between Riot Act and Pearl Jam is the longest, but the releases of Lost Dogs and Greatest Hits around that time probably made it seem not as long. Ahh, I guess there's always new bootlegs ;)

To me it sounds like they are not going to do anything until South America. Sounds like their tour pattern will not change. Sorry Texas.

You'd think that after so many tours and mini-tours, that they'd WANT to release new stuff in order to have new stuff to play.

I agree, and this interview cemented my thoughts on the new album: Right now, the guys are just enjoying doing some other projects. That's fine with me (even though the side projects RNDM, Brad, Tres Mts ect), don't tour anywhere near me). Hoping to get a new PJ release in late 2013 is what I thinking based on this interview. I'm also expecting Soundgarden to go out and play shows (not sure if it would be a full blown tour, but who knows), to promote their new record that comes out in November eventually next year.

I've not listened to the interview, I'm in work right now but I think its fairly clear anyway that recording would be on hold now due to Ed just about to go on tour for a couple of months. Doesn't seem like new news or a surprise to me in that regard

Part of me thinks what was left over from Backspacer can't be that good, especially with no b-sides accompanying the singles released from Backspacer

I don't know. Apparently there's a whole second disc of stuff from the Avocado sessions that no one's heard either, doesn't meant it's no good.

When was the last single they released that contained a proper b-side (studio)?

    The Riot Act singles.

Avocado and Backspacer had B-side free singles. Maybe they just don't record as much good stuff anymore and want to save what they record to cash in on another B-sides collection.

When Jeff said "when you have a label, you want time like this...so right now it's great"

I'm assuming he means since there is no pressure to make an album, they are enjoying their 'time off' and letting the creativity come naturally.

IMHO, I think record labels 'kill' bands when they say, 'you gotta put out 'X' albums in the next 5 years', artists feel pressured, rush to put out stuff, and usually, the stuff ends up being crap.

  • i'd love a new record tomorrow, but i can be patient. jeff usually doesn't take the piss in interviews (mike does) so when he says the reason he keeps doing this is because he thinks their best is yet to come, i believe him. I'm really hoping for a lot of jeff stuff on this next record because out of all of them, I think his passion for art and creating is the highest at this moment in time.
we got a lot to hold us over til then, lots of new music, lots of side projects, lots of legends on tour.

looking forward to rndm in a couple of weeks.

That' pretty flawed logic right there, least as far as PJ goes. They put out what is easily their worst album without pressure from a record company.

this is true, but the logic isn't flawed. they made their pop record when they had no pressure to, its kinda a pearl jam thing to do. its out of their system and hopefully they learned their lesson and will take us to deep space with the next one. time will tell

I've had the thought for a while that they were thinking over their options:

    1) Calling it a day and hanging up the guitars
    2) Doing more and more side project stuff while still keeping a (smallish) focus on the main act.

To me, it's somewhat obvious they chose the second option.

Good point. We had stuff like Sad, Down, and a whole bunch of other stuff that popped up between 2003-2006, or thereabouts. Now? Not so much.

Yes, yes, yes. This somewhat contradicts my previous point about more and more sideproject stuff, but you DO have to give time to let a beautiful garden grow into what it will become.
