It's one of the more personal ads of the 2012 campaign.
But no presidential campaign or super PAC is behind it. Rather, a new TV ad and Web video that warns of the ills of socialism while urging America to vote Republican next month is financed by Hungarian-born billionaire Thomas Peterffy.
In the video, Peterffy recalls his childhood under socialism in Hungary, and says, "The nation became poorer and poorer. And that's what I see happening here." He warns that the United States, his adopted country, is embarking on a "slippery slope."
He continues: "America's wealth comes from the efforts of people striving for success. Take away their incentive with badmouthing success and you take away the wealth that helps us take care of the needy. Yes, in socialism the rich will be poorer -- but the poor will also be poorer. People will lose interest in really working hard and creating jobs."
The ad does not mention President Obama or Mitt Romney once. But in a campaign season where Obama is often accused by Republicans of attacking the wealthy, the target is apparent. Peterffy reportedly plans to spend millions to air the ad in the weeks before Election Day.
Peterffy -- though not as prominent as perhaps the most famous Hungarian-born billionaire, George Soros -- is the founder of Interactive Brokers and one of the richest people in this country. Forbes lists his net worth at $4.6 billion. He's contributed freely over the years to mostly Republican candidates, including to Romney in his last two presidential campaigns. And he gave more than $60,000 to the Republican National Committee last year.
Born in Hungary in 1944, Peterffy left for the United States in 1965. In America, he learned English and eventually launched Interactive Brokers in 1993. He lives in Greenwich, Conn.

i swear i can't wait for the day that you guys realize that there is not some all-evil hellspawned boogeyman out there trying to destroy the country. you guys now are projecting your own failures and your own shortcomings onto the president without any legitimate cause. it'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Believe in America!
Woot!
There's so much dumbness in this post that it beggars belief.
Actually though, this isn't the first time that I've wondered whether our man with the 'Woot' isn't actually a left-leaning, open-minded, smart dude, with a queer sense of humour, simply playing devils advocate. I really have difficulty believing he's a real person. But then, I'm English, not American, so maybe I'm missing something about America here?0 -
Wait a minute- America is a socialist country? Whoot? When did that happen? Sorry man, not here."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0

It's his ideology...
Lets say there are no rich people.....were would you get the money to help the poor ? Prince of Dork you say your wealthy....would you like some one to dole out your money to others and have no say to who they give it to?“We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.” Abraham Lincoln0 -

I promise that I have never used the term "wealthy." Ever. I can be a jackass but I'm not a douchebag and while I will admit my success in business has come with a certain amount of financial reward, I'm not anywhere near Romney territory.
The president has never ONCE said he was going to take money out of my pocket and "dole" it out to people. Never said anything even approaching that NOR have any of his policies had a hint of that.
The law people seem to Point to a lot is Obamacare... Which does the opposite.
As things are now, if someone uninsured goes into an emergency room, does a pratfall and screams, they get "free emergency care" which is paid for by you and me... We pay for it in taxes and higher healthcare costs. That care is only "free" to them. Obamacare mandates that they must pay for their own health insurance. If they want to pay for a barebones coverage that will only cover catastrophic care.. Fine. But you and I shouldn't be stuck with their bill.
If they can't afford it, the government helps them out... Which we do now anyway.
If to you, this is "socialist," you don't know what the word means.
And besides... As a gay man who pays the same taxes but isn't allowed access to the same tax breaks and deductions that married straight couples get... I pay higher effective taxes and get less for my money. And nobody asked me about that.
What's worse is that people like Mitt Romney can donate money to his "church" which then uses that money to send teenagers around the world to try to talk them into becoming Mormons and joining his "church." That money is tax-free which means you and I have to make up the difference to pay for roads and bridges and public schools. And nobody asked me if I was ok with that.
Mitt Romney got to lounge around in France during the Vietnam war, dodging the draft with the excuse that his "church" required him to spend those years serving them instead. And he did that using money that was donated "tax free." Money that could have been used to fund better hospitals for the wounded men and women returning from Vietnam.
So please tell me where this "socialism" of which you shriek can be found.0 -
socialism is NOT his idealogy... :fp:aerial wrote:gimmesometruth27 wrote:why is the guy talking about the ills of socialism when obama is not a socialist???

calling obama a socialist is an insult to socialists everywhere..."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

Obama isn't a socialist. For christ sake he's barely a liberal.Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0

Thomas Peterffy is warning of heading down the path of socialism. That we are getting lazy and complacent. He is not saying anyone is socialist per se. Did you see the ad before commenting? I know it's hard to understand but that is why I am here, to help. This guy is exactly the sort of immigrant this country should be celebrating. A man that came here with nothing and rose to become a leader and jobs maker.
America is becoming poorer and poorer. I just don't see how people DON"T learn from the past.

AMT,
My dad used to tell me, “In this country, you will be able to accomplish all the things we never could.” He and my mom emigrated from Cuba to America to give us a better life.
They believed in American exceptionalism, the promise of America.
America was founded on the principle that every person has God-given rights; power belongs to the people; and government exists to protect our rights. We shouldn’t be trapped by the circumstances of our birth -- we should be free to go as far as our talents and work can take us.
In America, we’re united not by a common race or ethnicity -- but by common values. This election’s about preserving those values and applying the founding principles to solve the challenges of our time.
It's a choice about what kind of country we want to leave our children. Let’s choose more freedom instead of more government. Let’s choose Mitt Romney and the Republican team to lead our nation back to prosperity.
Mitt believes we need to change the direction of our country. He has a plan to create 12 million new jobs. Together with the Republican team, he can deliver the real recovery America deserves.
Marco Rubio
