  • Interesting. I'm skeptical that it'll bring hi-def to the masses, but it's a great start.
  • ambitious and his heart is in the right place.

Neil rules, plain and simple. beyond stoked for my crazy horse show.

I'm definitely interested. I keep meaning to look into it more, see what I can find out about if & when it's likely to happen etc.

I'm guessing it involves buying thousands of dollars of music that I already bought. I like the idea though.

I figure we'll be able to put whatever's in our hard drive already onto it, ripped CDs, downloaded stuff etc. I never was fully 'subscribed' to itunes anyway, always still buy the CD for music I really care about. I hope we find out soon. Go Neil!!!

Well he's saying it plays music that sounds much richer than what you get even from a CD.

Yeah, most of my music is on CD (much of it from BMG ;) ), and whatever is digital only (mostly $5 amazon MP3's  ) can be easily burnt to a CD.

It'll flop. It may find a small niche market, but for the most part people don't care about fidelity. Check hdcd's, sacds, and the fact that vinyl ever went out in the first place.

The thing is that we were told a digital CD was massively superior in sound to vinyl at the time. I think people just didn't know better.

Not saying nobody drank that koolaid, but if sound quality was really an issue with the majority of people things wouldn't be going the way they're going. Even now, with the growth of vinyl sales, it's still just a fraction of the sales that mp3s get. I'd also venture to guess that very little of the vinyl sales is b/c of sound quality and b/c it somehow became cool again. I can appreciate the difference in sound quality that records can offer, but I suspect I'm in the minority of newer buyers of vinyl. I see it here, and other message boards all the time, people talking up the sound quality of certain records that sound just flat out bad or about the same as the cd.

    +10000

I love how people talk all big and bad about how much better their music is because it wasn't ripped from a CD or bought from Itunes.

Hmmm, indeed there will be no use having a new player if you're using the same mp3 files currently in your computer. I found a couple of articles about the pono today:
    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ ... e-20120927
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/shortcu ... sfeed=true
It will suck having to buy everything again & yeah it probably is a small market, most people won't bother, but nice to have the option. See how much the files cost as to whether I'll sign up.

The thing is ugly and a joke...I'm guessing here most people people put music on their phone or a USB stick for portability. I imagine that only teenagers now buy iPods and portable music devices while older people use their phone or usb sticks for portability...and most teenagers don't care if the sound is absolutely perfect or whatever.

I'm guessing these files will be much larger than whats in most people music library...wouldn't be surprised its another cash grab by the record companies/musicians, getting people to buy a different format.

That show got you pretty pissed at ol' Neil, huh.

I doubt it's a cash grab. Neil Young has been complaining about the sound quality of music since the cd age. If he's the one pushing this thing and he's really hoping it becomes the main way people listen to music I think he's in for a sad outcome

No offense to NY but for the vast majority they are happy with cd/mps or putting the music on usb stick. Every time their a format change these musicians stand to make a boatload of money if the format change is excepted...the one exception to a format change when they didn't make a boatload of money was mp3.

I can't deny any of that, but surely NY has looked at the past success of other products with promised higher fidelity and seen that people just aren't interested for the most part. I'm all for him putting a product like this out there, but if he thinks it's gonna overtake the ipod/mp3 I think he's sadly mistaken. Like I said, he's been complaining about sound quality for a long time so his heart is in the right place, even if he stands to make some money off the deal.

Ten for sure and the second one could be anything between No Code, Yield, Backspacer and Lightning Bolt.

I'm doubting it will be PJ albums, based on the way it's worded. Would be nice, but some variety might be nice as I already own the PJ albums that are available in FLAC HD.

As someone who doesn't own an iPod, I was thinking this might be for me but Im a bit skeptical about it. The promo video was a bit cheesy to say the least.

Being an analog fan, I've never owned an iPod or an MP3 player and only have a CD player because some music is only available on CD, not vinyl. The Pono might be my first small digital listening device- but not until the price comes down which it do doubt will. Vinyl played on a good turn table through my Marantz receiver and and Polk Audio speakers (a modestly priced but great sounding set up) will still be my first choice, however.
