Ok.. Hi.. been a long time since ive been on this board!! life got ahold of me & i lost my pearl jam forum time 
!!! Anyway~ fellow jammers, please help me!! Im stuck...I have a paper due tomorrow (yea....i know.) its my interpersonal communications class..the essay paper is "looking into music" & we are to "Choose a song that in some way has a recurring theme of interpersonal communication, the self in interpersonal communication or perception. Write the essay explaining how the message of the song relates to the principle (or principles) that you've chosen from the text."
Which, isnt that difficult but im struggling with picking out a song...im kinda hung up on it..and think im over thinking it..idk..ive def hit a wall..just thought maybe i could get some good ideas here...thanks for your time

Hail hail has been described as a "dysfunctional love song" by Ed before. I dont know how much interpersonal self communication is going on there.

what does "the self in interpersonal communication or perception" mean? doesn't 'interpersonal' mean more than one person? so the 'self' in interpersonal...are you supposed to pick a song that's more of an introspective narrative, or one that's about interpersonal communication, with the essay's focus on the perspective of 'the self' ? I'd overthink this too...but then, I have no idea what they're teaching you in this class
Alive is a song the person grading it would recognize....and if I'm understanding the assignment at all, it fits the bill.
If you want to get fancy, you can talk about how the interpersonal communication has evolved in interpretation, even to the author. Ed has a talked about this....said something about the song's chorus kind of mocking life when he first wrote it...but it became some kind of affirmation of survival after having the crowd sing it back to him....something along those lines. (was this in PJ20? can't remember)0 -

I think it was the Q and A at storytellers or a show around that time, something that was taped because I remember watching it. Im pretty sure he said the song was a negative song when he first wrote it, like fuck I'm still alive but over the years the audience changed the meaning for him for the positive...0 -
