A colleague at work was kind enough to give away her copy of this album to me for free.
Haven't heard songs off it before other than Schism (love that song).
Listened to the album a few times now and it is growing on me.
The Grudge and Reflection are amazing songs.
What do you all think about this album?

I haven't listened to music on headphones in bed in a long long time.
Might copy this cd for the drive to work tomorrow (I never keep originals in the car).

  • Amazing album. I quote Lateralus like people quote the bible. I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Patient, that song gets me every time, and the trio of Grudge/Patient/Schism is stellar. I love Tool and all of their albums, but this is easily the best. "Spiral out!"

    Yes! Parabol>Parabola is great.

I saw them live on 9/21/2001 in mansfield mass. That tour was amazing.

One of the best of all time, though I'd say Aenima is better since it still has the early raw aggression.

The tour for this was absolutely amazing, especially the 1st NA leg. Caught them just as I was just getting into them and it had an impact on me that I'm still feeling.

The Grudge-Just so hynotizing and the drumming in the last 30 seconds is flat out jawdropping, almost as jawdropping as the Maynard scream that starts at about 7m and ends at about 7:25
Eon Blue Apocalypse>Patient-Just love the tune, oh the dynamics
Schism-one of the coolest riffs in the history of bassdom and there so much cool shit during the quiet part
    Parabol>Parabola-f'ing badass
Ticks and Leeches-Amazing drumming and love how Maynard shreds his vocal cords
Lateralus-I believe is their masterpiece. Has everything you could look for in a Tool song and the lyrical message encapsulates so much of what they are about
Disposition>Reflection>Triad-Took me awhile to really dig these, but it's some of their best stuff. A real journey

Wish they were still this good, or rather hope they can be this good again. I think 10,000 Days was a step back, and alot of the touring, while they were amazing shows, felt like they were going through the motions.

I think the start of 10,000 days was great, but fell off towards the end of the album.

Vicarious, Jambi, Wings, 10,000 days, the pot

Yeah, it's fine from any other band. It just has a lot of rehashed ideas from Aenima and Lateralus. I think Wings>10k Days and Jambi are the only tunes on there that haven't lifted something almost directly from an earlier tune. From a band that prides itself on moving forward I didn't think they moved forward.

I think it actually gets stronger at the end. Rosetta Stoned is huge and the way Right In Two builds is so fucking ridiculously great.

Maybe as a whole it just doesn't feel like an album. They seemed to put alot more care in the way the tunes on Aenima and Lateralus unfolded.

One of my all-time favorite albums. I don't think Tool will ever do anything this good again. Favorites songs are Lateralus and Reflection.

I agree with everything here about Lateralus other than that I prefer it over Aenima. Lateralus is really outstanding and I think they will struggle to better it. I actually love 10000 Days now whereas I only found it so-so at first. It's still a huge step above what so many other bands create. They could have done better possibly but I think they still have it in them to improve next time.

    Aenima
  • i think lateralus is their magnum opus. it 79 minutes and 58 seconds of just this gargantuan vision. Its out there, but you listen to it and theres no question this is a band at the peak of their powers. The lyrics are top notch and everyone involved is playing their instrument amazingly. Tool as a band and as a force is endlessly facinating to me. Id wager they are the most bizaare band to ever make it mainstream, or definitely up there on that list. The whole fibonacci sequence is unreal, no other band would even attempt it. I love what they represent and the music is second to none

They really are quite the band. The maths going into this album are crazy and make for a multi-layered experience for the listener.
