Senate passes sportsmen's bill in 84-7 vote
Sep 22, 2012 1:42 AM EDT
A sportsmen's bill that could help a Democratic incumbent in Montana has survived a procedural hurdle in the Senate.

The bill would allow hunters to bring back 41 polar bear carcasses from Canada as big game trophies. The bill also would permit more hunting and fishing on federal lands and let bow hunters cross federal land where hunting isn't allowed.

Other provisions would encourage federal land agencies to cooperate with state and local authorities to maintain shooting ranges, exclude ammunition and tackle from federal environmental laws that regulate lead, boost fish populations and protect animal habitat.

Republicans contend the only reason for the vote was to benefit Democratic incumbent Jon Tester's re-election prospects in Montana.

The vote was 84-7.

NRA supports this message.

WOOT.

uummmmm, so this bill allows legally taken animals from a DIFFERENT country to be brought back INTO the country? Asssuming these animals were taken in a manner that conforms with Canadian Law I dont see the issue.

If the GOP in the Senate was so up in arms about this , how come the vote was what it is? Also it needs to pass the house does it not? Nothing going on there til after the election then nothing likely to happen til after the first of the year.

I don't see a problem with it either.

Not a fan of lead ammo on a hunt though

yeah, allowing lead ammo and tackle seems a little counter productive to protecting habitat.

When you find anyone running for any office that conforms 100% to your views, could you please let us know? I certainly haven't found any that conform 100% to mine. :(
  • Nice to see our senators take time away from reducing our debt and helping more Americans find a job so a bunch of gutless cowards can get a trophy of an endangered animal they murdered over 5 years ago.

I don't care which party supports or doesn't.. the idea that hunting of animals especially endangered ones like polar bears is even on the table is frankly disgusting.

  • What's the point in a legal trophy hunt if you can't ship the carcass home?

I think if you blast something, you shoot eat it.

No polar bears for me. I bet they are tasty though. Seriously.

Actually, consuming polar bear flesh is hazardous to one's health. One of their internal organs produces some type of toxin.

As an environmentalist, I support legal hunting done in a sustainable manner. The U.S. national wildlife refuge system receives the lion's share of it's funding from fees and taxes paid by hunters.

Is the polar bear listed as endangered by the Canadian government?

The only two issues I have about this is the number of carcases one person can bring back seems a little excessive for "trophies." And two, I thought polar bears were endangered. Wouldn't that make it illegal to hunt them in the first place?

  • Canada is the only country to allow international, non-native trophy hunters to kill on its soil and approximately 500 polar bears are killed each year.

Scientists claimed in 2008 between 20-25,000 remain in the wild.

But that number could be cut by two thirds by mid century if the Arctic continues to warm due to climate change, as many experts predict.

In 2008, the US government declared polar bears an endangered species and banned all American hunters from returning from Canada with their trophies.

Looks like tester will do whatever he has to do to get elected even if it means whoring himself out for votes so a bunch of douchebags can get a trophy of an endangered animal.

  • Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was all set to get his full Senate vote today on his bill to cut all U.S. aid to Egypt, Libya, and Pakistan; and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was set to get a vote on his resolution to establish the sense of the Senate that containment of a nuclear Iran is not an option for U.S. policy.

But the entire deal was derailed by a last-minute effort by Senate leaders to add a new bill to the agreement, a "Sportsman Act" sponsored by Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), who is up for re-election. Tester's bill would ease restrictions on hunting, fishing, and shooting on federal public lands.

both of those votes would have been ignorant. Aid , should be revisited I agree, but to sign into law?

Its my belief that policy needs to be fluid easily changed and shaped to fit needs/interests of current events. within the purview of the Pres. Not a political stunt right before a recess before an election. Which I grant the Tester vote appears to be.

Desperate move in a tightly run race?

With Karl Rove charging him from every angle, all I know is that Karl Rove is an asshole, so I would still trust Tester over any ally of Rove's ANY DAY.

This is a shame, and disturbing, as if polar bears don't have enough problems with loss of habitat, etc. Agree that it is truly D bags that hunt for trophies, as opposed to hunting for food. Not that I would hunt for either. Maybe I can let the Senator know my opinion about this Sun, when I get to meet him.
  • I was just reading up on my buddy the polar bear, and came across a section where it details how many hunting licenses the Canadian Territories give out each year, yadda yadda yadda. It dawned on me how disturbing it is that one species sells a little piece of paper that allows the purchaser the right to hunt and kill the animal, with no reason whatsoever.

what a barbaric practice this is. all for a trophy, to show that you have the skill to cower and hide from a big strong animal and shoot it from a distance. gee, what a big man you are, Mr Hunter. you should be so proud of the trophy in your living room.

    you disgust me.

And so, you'd eat a polar bear? Your sharp skills might just give you the chance to die in a bus in the woods like Chris McCandless if tybird is correct.

Trophy hunting is sickening, just eat everything you kill please.
