    Seriously, the fuck?

    Best part:

"KCNC-TV in Denver reports defense attorneys had argued Watson’s health problems stemmed not from popcorn but from his years of working with carpet-cleaning chemicals."

    Jeeeez!

I was at a OSHA safety training class and the guy running it was head of safety at Weaver Popcorn. Weaver's biggest safety and health concern is buttery flavored vapors and they take extreme precautions to avoid personal from getting in contact with it. I guess it can really screw your lungs up and kill you if you get too much exposure.

Kinda makes me think twice every time I throw a bag in the microwave. :? (i still eat it)

Also, I had never heard of it before as well before that class.

Wow. That's actually an issue? And here I was calling bullshit on it; never heard of this before either.

    PS...

    :corn:

  • yeah, not sure if it's the same guy or not, but it is actually real. I saw a guy on the news that was suing the popcorn company because he ate two bags a day, then got lung cancer from it.

maybe don't eat that much fucking mircowave popcorn, idiot.

perhaps it was the micro waves that gave him cancer not on haling popcorn butter.

apparently it's a fact that there is a chemical in the butter that, if inhaled in mass quantities over a long period of time, causes this condition.

but yes, I agree, I use my microwave as LITTLE as possible. I just don't trust that they won't one day find that we all have cancer because of them.

i love microwave popcorn. fortunately i dont have a microwave so i eat it very sparingly... and i try not to inhale the fumes.

If you still want "microwave" popcorn but don't want the nasty chemicals that will, no doubt, cause cancer, you can use a brown paper bag to do the same thing. Then you can add REAL butter, not that fake crap that masquerades as butter. Check it out here: http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/06/17/recipe-the-popcorn-trick/

For my money, I bought an air popper so no worries about the microwave either. Takes the same amount of time as the bagged stuff.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

I assumed the guy was working at a popcorn plant ... but to claim it because of eating too much popcorn is preposterous. People that get this have been working for years in plants, not eating a couple bags a day.

Yeah, I agree, Chadwick. Microwaving in general is just plain unhealthy. I'd eat food cold any day before I'd stick in a microwave oven. They're bad for your food, bad for your body.

    - Sensory characteristics and retention of vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, and magnesium were determined in vegetables cooked by conventional and microwave methods. Fresh broccoli, cauliflower, and potatoes and frozen corn and peas were cooked by boiling, steaming, microwave boiling and microwave steaming to equivalent tenderness as measured by a shear press. The sensory analysis of the vegetables cooked by the four methods indicated that some differences existed in color, flavor, texture, and moistness of the vegetables. No one method resulted in vegetables with optimum sensory characteristics. The nutrient retention was highest in foods cooked by microwave steaming, followed by microwave boiling, followed by steaming, and then by boiling. Generally vegetables cooked by microwave techniques retained higher percentages of the U. S. Recommended Daily Allowances for the nutrients than those cooked by conventional methods

    - Percent thiamin in beef loaf and peas and percent ascorbic acid in potatoes were determined at all process stages in a simulated hospital cook/chill foodservice system. Retention of nutrients in experimental products after reheating by conduction, convection and microwave radiation was compared. Points in food product flow causing largest nutrient losses were: beef loaf, precooking; peas, reheating; and potatoes, 24-hr chilled storage. Statistical analyses indicated no significant difference in nutrient retention of experimental products due to method of reheating.

    - Abstract: Several studies have shown that microwave cooking, if properly used, does not change the nutrient content of foods to a larger extent than conventional heating. In fact, suggests that there is a tendency towards greater retention of many micronutrients with microwaving, probably due to the shorter preparation time. Does not describe non-thermal effects. The main problem with microwaving is the uneven heating of the food, which has raised concern regarding microbiological safety. Microwaving infant formula and breast milk has become increasingly popular. The content of nutrients and antibacterial factors in milk are maintained unchanged provided the final temperature does not exceed 60?C.

This is not misinformation. There are other studies shown that debate the relative merits of microwaving food. According to the Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture, foods, like broccoli lost up to 97% of their antioxidant values after microwaving. Other studies have shown that B12 becomes inactive once submitted to radiation from microwave use.

And studies have shown that microwaving foods, like popcorn, in their packaging, leaks toxic chemicals, like carcinogens, into the food being microwaved. Carcinogenic compounds have been linked to higher incidences of cancer. Unfortunately, groups like the FDA and USDA do not always present accurate information on the dangers of these chemicals. Primarily, because many of these studies are based on short term studies.

food cooked in a microwave tastes like shit & the concept of quickly heating/cooking food is so fucking weird that i am not interested in eating it. sure i have reheated leftovers in a microwave; i try very hard to avoid doing so. i find the whole concept unhealthy no matter what others with their factual info have to say.

food is best fixed the old fashioned way... slow & steady with fire. i am not in the rat race the corporate suck my balls world is in so no thank you @ nuked bullpoop grub. mostly the microwave is a clock to me.

Since we're tearing microwaves a new one, I'll chime in. Please don't put plastics in the microwave. All kinds of God-knows-what comes out of the plastic when you do that. And then I see people put styrofoam in there--yikes! I try to avoid heating plastic up the best I can, not putting it in the dishwasher, etc.
