  • Being as I was unimpressed with their reunion album, this doesn't bother me. What I would love to see is another Army of Anyone album. That one I enjoyed. And when I saw both Velvet Revolver and STP do live shows, I preferred Velvet Revolver.

The last time they released a good album was 1996 so they've been a nostalgia act for over 15 years.

  • No, they were making good music with others during some of that time.
  • this is not a surprise. DeLeo also makes a good point about not playing the deep cuts live, because the fans don't want them. unfortunately, they don't have a really hardcore fanbase like PJ or DMB, most of their fans are casual fans who loved Core and the radio hits since then. I mean, I think I was the only person I knew who actually bought shangriladeeda. Most people didn't even know they had a new record out.

To a point you have to do what your fans want, otherwise there is no market for you and you don't end up doing anything.

Or do what Billy Corgan does; play the new album that average joe doesn't care about front to back and sell no tickets to the shows.

I think Shangri-la deeda is pretty badass and No. 4 definitely has mostly solid tunes on it. S/T was pretty uneven and kinda streamlined but had some pretty neat stuff.

To me neither 4 or Shangri is good from start to finish and I can't stand S/T

My favorite STP album is Purple.

I really like all of their albums up to No. 4.

You would think that the first two were really really popular. Surely they could mix up some of the tracks they play from those albums?

If they started play deep tracks from the last two albums I'd probably be a bit list. Deep tracks from the first four albums and I'd probably be stoked.

I saw STP play a small arena here about 2 years ago. It was completely "Meh". Both the band and crowd were lethargic. It looked like everyone was going through the motions.

It was completely different to the back to back shows I saw in 2000 (Theatre show in Vancouver, BC and headling Tatoo the Earth in Portland, OR). Those shows were pretty awesome. The festival show had to be tough because they somehow got slotted to headline a metal festival, and it was the only date on that metal tour they got slotted into. For the big portion of the crowd that stayed, they did a good job of entertaining the 15000 or so people that remained behind.
  • How fucking depressing, at the top of their game STP were a stunning live band. This is the STP I remember:

The stupid thing is they could still be this band if Weiland sorted his shit out. Given the fact that bands like Nickelback have been running with the early 90's template (to ridiculous success) for ages now, a solid record promoted properly could easily make them popular again.
  • To a point you have to do what your fans want, otherwise there is no market for you and you don't end up doing anything.

To be honest, if that's the case, and they accept that the majority of their fans are casual fans mostly into the hits, why not just write a record that plays to those strengths? Between Army Of Anyone and the last STP record the DeLeo brothers clearly still know how to write the hooks. Some bands are meant to evolve and change from record to record - but I'd happily take Purple part 2 at this time.

Went and saw these guys last monday and what a joke! Weiland, I'd assume it was his fault due to previous issues, and band showed up two hours late on a monday night. At least a quarter of the people there left before they even played a note and then they come out and play with Weiland's vocals horrible. Any word he said between songs was gibberish and incoherent.
Anyways, thankfully it was a twenty dollar groupon ticket. THere first four albums rocked and playing non-hits, such as pretty penny, of those albums would make for a good tour
I'd definetely read reviews to see if Weiland is off the wagon or not before putting money down to see them again.

:fp: that sucks. Yeah i've said this before, but they are hit or miss with being good live. Guess this was a miss :(

  • i saw them at a small venue in NOLA back in 2000....was incredible concert!

anyways yea i didnt care for Shangri La much at all but i really liked No 4

S/T album had a few decent songs on it....i think its pretty much over for them..scotts always having vocal issues for one thing

I agree... I can't fault a band for either approach. If you want to make money, and play the hits, then great... they will always have a fanbase to sell tickets too. Look at most of the classic rock acts that still tour. If I see Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones live, I don't really care about new material.

And if Billy Corgan wants to play new stuff, that's fine too... but he's going to be playing to small clubs, where most of the crowd is still waiting to hear "Today" or "1979".

I didn't really expect anything from them, not surprised. In my opinion they haven't put out anything listenable since Purple. Just my opinion don't slam me too hard
"All I Ever Knew" available now in print and digital formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks.
  • I can really only listen to the first three albums anyway. They were probably one of my top 5 favorite bands in the 90's, until I went to pick up "No. 4" the day it came out, and was really let down. Not sure why, that album did absolutely nothing for me. Since then I haven't really cared about any of their new material. I make it a point to buy/listen to their new albums when they come out, but haven't been impressed.

I'd say that Scott Weiland's "12 Bar Blues" or the rest of the band in "Talk Show" are better than any STP albums released after "Tiny Music...".

Having said that, I'm a little sad they've decided to become a nostalgia act and not write new material. I understand where they're coming from and why, so I'm not ragging on them. I bet they do record at some point though.
