just curious if they jam out RVM when they played it second or third in the set, as opposed to the usual set ending 10 minute versions.

  • It's usually much shorter when it's early in the set. It's almost always played late it the set recently. A good example of it making an early apperance was the 11/6/2000 show in Seattle. It's a unique song in that it can last 4 minutes or 10. Not many songs outside of Porch and RVM can claim that.
    06/22/95, 11/04/95, 11/15/97, 07/16/98, 10/30/99, 10/30/00, 10/31/00, 10/20/01, 10/21/01, 12/08/02, 06/01/03, 06/06/03, 10/25/03, 10/26/03, 09/28/04, 03/18/05, 09/01/05, 07/15/06, 07/16/06, 07/18/06, 07/22/06, 07/23/06, 10/21/06, 10/22/06, 08/28/09, 09/21/09, 09/22/09, 05/20/10, 05/21/10, 10/24/10, 11/26/13, 12/06/13, 06/28/14, 10/26/14, 07/10/18, 08/10/18, 10/02/21,
  • I was listening to the Pistoia boot yesterday, and I was really surprised when Eddie went into the "Saw things" part so fast, the whole song only lasted 4 minutes. Then again, a long jam during one of the first 5 songs wouldn't have been a good idea anyway.

PS :so lucky I got to see RVM and Porch at the same show (Arnhem) did it happen before? again?)

the only new version of RVM ive liked is at the show i attended.. on boots I usually dont even pay attention when that song plays because its always the same looooong ass jam

the early versions i love however.. circa 94'

i agree with you for the most part, in that the Halifax version is easily my favorite, but its not cuz i was there, i think it lagitimately has the best jam. i have seen it a few other times and ewach one pails in comparison to it.
on a side note i think the song has a lot more intensity to it when it is played shorter, but for hippies like me i can certainly get into the longer versions, kinda like RITFW and I've Got a Feelin, from 94 (at hte Orpheum in Boston)

  • I kind of like the jams, just not too long, once its like 4 minutes of jamming, it gets annoying but if the song ends at 6 or 7 minutes, I enjoy it because it builds up the crowd....perfect example is MSG1 03...
    2003: Uniondale, MSG x2 | 2004: Reading | 2005: Gorge, Vancouver, Philly | 2006: East Rutherford x2, Gorge x2, Camden 1, Hartford | 2008: MSG x2, VA Beach | 2009: Philly x3 | 2010: MSG x2, Bristow | 2011: Alpine Valley x2 | 2012: MIA Philly | 2013: Wrigley, Charlottesville, Brooklyn 2 | 2014: Milan, Amsterdam 1 | 2016: MSG x2, Fenway x2, Wrigley 2 | 2018: Rome, Krakow, Berlin, Wrigley 2 | 2021: Sea Hear Now | 2022: San Diego, LA x2, MSG, Camden, Nashville, St. Louis, Denver | 2023: St. Paul 1, Chicago x2, Fort Worth x2, Austin 2 | 2024: Las Vegas 1, Seattle x2, Indy, MSG x2, Philly x2, Baltimore, Ohana 2
  • I like the early version.. a friend was lucky enough to get the set list in vienna and it says RVM (short) on the list. They still play it fast and hard ofcourse but no extended jam.

Give me an early short version of RVM and keep the jam in Porch the original jam song.

  • (QUESTION 1)
So which song do you think will become the next "Jam Session"?

I've been trying to think of which songs have evolved into longer jams (7:00 or longer)
"Even Flow", "Porch", "Rearviewmirror", and "Indifference" are the early ones that come to mind. I'd include "Yellow Ledbetter" with its differing leads wrapped in but not neccessarily the "Daughter" or "Betterman" w/ tags...

I'll take "Porch" with all the tags I can get.

And I for one am glad that the band loves to play "Corduroy" as often as they do, but I really wish they'd return back to the original vibe the song had. It used to be six minutes and had tempo slightly faster than "Tremor Christ". Now it's been shaved a minute and a half and is just sped up, real fast. So many horrible "Corduroy" takes in the 2000 boots.

The song has either evolved or devolved, depending on your point of view. Quite a few songs have actually been sped up for shows (Probably to get more titles into the setlist), but if the band took their entire catalog and played some of the songs manically fast on one night and depressively slow and somber a few nights later, people would experience new insights into the songs they've never heard before.

    (QUESTION 2)
Have you ever tried listening to a PJ song by an altering it first?

I've heard "Black", "Immortality", and "Tremor Christ" all sped up double time. Each tune becomes mesmerizing, the way the riffs weave (TC is literally hypnotic sounding), If you're on a PC, take your 'Ten' and 'Vitalogy' discs and rip these to your hardrives. Play them in Windows Media Player, and under the "ESTIMATED TIME" hit the >> key twice. It'll hit fast forward and you'll hear the three songs at double speed, and if you know the song by heart you won't get lost. The question remains, if "Tremor Christ" could be played that fast in concert, people wouldn't know what hit them.

I need to do some digging to find my old app for altering song times. It's freeware, so if I can find it I'll post in the trade thread, you can also cut and paste (the downside is that the saved .wav files will take up many megs before you convert them to your preffered format. There's even pitch control, but no matter what you do, if you take a recording and screw with the timerate, the pitch will alter in some fashion.

But one could argue a 3-minute "Black" or "Immortality" sort of defeats the artist's vision of the song. It's unnatural, but it's not an abomination, such as canned applause on a record passing off studio demos as "Live" concert tracks. If you can find a program to slow/speed up PJ songs (without altering the pitch of Eddie's voice or the lead channel guitar), then I say try it. Dig out all your old CDs and mess with the songs. Experience the album in a new way.

i think that is a really good idea. it would certainly give new life to songs we hear way too often. I for one this an accoustic version of Even Flow every now and again would spice it up and make me love it the way i back in the early 90s

i tried that with Tremor Christ, it is awsome! dont know that it can be done live, but it was certainly worth doing on my PC

    I couldn't agree more!
The fast Corduroys from 2000 on lack the groove the song had before..

Uniondale '03: second song in the main set. Was pretty wild. The jam was much shorter though.
