He just wanted some seafood for dinner.

A humpback whale made a splash at Rockaway Beach Sunday, swimming close to the shore while chasing a school of fish.

Photographer Phil Ng took this shot of the whale diving as he passed by on a tour boat.

“It’s rare to see them that close to shore,’’ he said. “It was heading inland, chasing fish. It was interesting seeing it so close to the city.

“When we think of natural wildlife here, we think of raccoons or pigeons or maybe an escaped parrot,’’ the Brooklyn resident noted.

“So to see something that could accidentally swallow you whole . . . ”

That is pretty close...I've seen them about 5 or 6 miles out of Jones Inlet. I was wreck fishing once out on the Hempstead reef when......wala this monster surfaced 25yds away from our boat :o It scarred the shit out of us for a second, but was really something to see.

I've also seen a ton of them out in the canyons about 70 miles out during Tuna season. Its obviously not as rare with the water being 2000 ft deep. I've been a fisherman practically all my life...my business partner bought his 1st boat about 7 yrs ago( onto his 3rd now :o ) and we go out at least once a week from april till late nov/early dec depending on the weather and the shit i've seen.....I'm not much of a swimmer anymore :mrgreen:JK, But I do realize whats out there. The whales and dolphins are always a delight, as are the sharks...but when you see a school of Hammerheads, or even some Mako's and Thresher's within a mile of shore...it makes you pause.

  • Nice and on an unrelated note, don't know you if the saw the first scene in this week's Boardwalk Empire, but it looked an awful lot like the Fort Tilden section of the Rockaways.

    uhm, not really.
They've said illness is what brought it to "beach" itself,
and indeed the prognosis was not good.

I saw a humpback maybe 50 meters from shore when I was whale watching from a Zodiac in Tofino on Vancouver Island... And it is amazing to see a whale anywhere!! That was one of the best days. :)

The orca whales are out there too, right ? That would be amazing to witness!

I have not been as close as this guy in the boat,
    but even as much as 50-100 yards from the shore is mesmerizing enough;
as they bop up and down on the horizonline and blowing mist, and (rarely) breaching the water..
Obviously as seen in this video they are feeding, and have the fish literally jumping out of the water.

Purely speculation, but I read here in Rockaway and some of Long Island as well,
that we lost all of our sandbars and coastal shelves along the shore after Superstorm Sandy,
allowing them to approach even closer to the shore more than they ever could before .

I also suspect September is some sort of migrational period for the whales
because I remember the last 2 Septembers
having increasing reports of whale sightings off of the coast all over NYC/Long Island.

    tho i have never seen a humpback, i think it'd be a blast. 8-)

yes there are endangered resident orcas (pods J, K & L) in the waters around lower Vancouver island...thru the straights, around the San Juan islands down into Puget sound. in 2001 my kids and I were on the Victoria Star (a small passenger-only ferry) from Bellingham heading over to Victoria....just the easiest way to get there, it wasn't like it was a whale watching tour...

anyway as the boat turned into a passage between islands it came upon the L pod...so the captain cut the engines to not harm them. (my camera was out of film...x%*#^!) it was unreal as we watched from the starboard side, there were orcas all over, we lost count of how many we saw. the boat just drifted along as they were on all sides of us. then after just about all of the pod had swam by, a mommy and her newborn calf breached right in front of us, within just feet of the boat! :o awww.... the momma was definitely showing off her new baby! everyone on board was totally awestruck! words can't describe what an incredibly sweet sight it was :o

at the time the captain remarked the baby couldn't be more than a few weeks old. well since all the southern resident orcas have names, and can also be identified by their markings. a few yrs ago i was able to tell that the mommy we saw mustve been Ino L-54 with her lil baby Indigo L-100. (both are still doing well according to recent sightings)
