Blue Jays’ Yunel Escobar played game with homophobic slur written across eyeblack

Pretty sad...MLB will come down hard on him.
Should the jays be punished? I'm sure they have Spanish speaking coaches who noticed this.

as far as the punishment ... i think patrick burke said that he would rather have education vs suspension and i would tend to agree ... at the end of the day - whether he plays another game this season is not gonna be a huge factor as far as the jays or mlb is concerned ...
I think he should be suspended, fined and loss of pay.
To me it's disgusting that he did it in the first place and secondly that another Spanish speaking members of the jays did not bring this to the attention of management.

well that wassn't very bright was it...he could have used different wording like "straight pride" but nooooo !
maybe he didn't mean it in a sexual way at all...it could have been a messege for someone he is pissed at..who knows ?

“I would take it as, ‘You are like a girl. You’re weak’,” Cuervo said. “I don’t curse much, so I don’t know the appropriate level in English. It has to be something like ‘wuss’.”
In Spanish-speaking families, according to Cuervo, parents might refer to a 7-year-old boy who’s crying as a maricon, as in ‘Don’t be such a baby’. You might say the same thing in the same situation to a female child.
“If anything, it’s sexism against women,” Cuervo said wryly. Overall, she didn’t seem predisposed to be shocked by the use of the word: “It’s trash talking.”
She also noted a point of grammar. The word (and the insult) is made stronger if maricon is used as a noun. It isn’t in this case, because there is no un modifying it (as in un maricon).
Given all that, the use of the word ‘faggot’ as a catch-all translation would seem an oversimplification.
It’s possible that Escobar meant ‘maricon’ in its inter-familial form. Not at all likely, but possible.
Given that he isn’t walking into a time warp that takes him back to 1890 after every game and that he should have some instinct for survival, it seems quite possible that Escobar meant the word in its de-sexualized context, as a generic goof.
maybe using the english language while you're here making good money playing on an American Baseball Team would clear up any misunderstandings about what he ment to say...

To MLB, it shouldn't matter. Granted, the anti-gay aspect (if that was intended) gets all of the media attention, but even if he had "You are a pussy" written in eye black, MLB has to come down hard on him for it.
You just can't allow that sort of public display.

13 Comments Blue Jays’ shortstop Yunel Escobar could face disciplinary action after photographs surfaced showing the 29-year-old Cuban on the field at Rogers Centre with a homophobic slur written under his eyes.
Escobar, who has been with the Jays since 2010, played Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox with the Spanish words “TU ERE MARICON” written on an eyeblack sticker, a black patch baseball players wear under their eyes to reduce the sun’s glare.

The phrase’s most common English translation is “You are a faggot.” Other translations are less explicitly homophobic, but more of an emasculating insult.
A league spokesman told the Star via email they are “looking into the matter.”
The Blue Jays released a statement late Monday night saying they do not support discrimination “nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday’s game.”

“The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter.”
GM Alex Anthopoulos will address the matter with media on Tuesday in New York, the statement read, adding that they “expect” Escobar, Jays’ manager John Farrell and Spanish-speaking coach Luis Rivera to also be in attendance.
Last year Major League Baseball suspended Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell for two weeks after McDowell made lewd gestures, perceived to be homophobic, towards fans in San Francisco
