love the song but Insignificance, Nothing As It Seems, Crazy Mary, Man Of The Hour and Present Tense all rank higher in my opinion
  • Severed Hand really translates well live really like that song
    5/30/03 9/2/05 9/4/05 9/5/05 7/22/06 7/23/06 9/21/09 9/22/09 9/21/11 9/22/11
  • it's ok, but i reckon i could comfortably name 50 or more better live songs than severed hand.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.
  • Probably the best song on Pearl Jam along with Worldwide Suicide. Greatest live song? Not even close..
  • it's ok, but i reckon i could comfortably name 50 or more better live songs than severed hand.

    Go!
I mean, not the song, but name 50 songs that are undoubtedly better than Severed Hand live. Or at least 50 songs that are played as routinely as Severed Hand that are better live. Basically, it's a song that's really, really awesome and has an unbelievable (and variable) groove at the end that's fairly unmatched.

    Don't think I wouldn't look!
Just to start..I have beef with: Sometimes (really? You picked "Sometimes"?? The only version of "Sometimes" I've ever heard that was truly distinct as a live version was St. Louis 2010), Of The Girl (Studio better, except for Benaroya), In My Tree (same as Of the Girl), Oceans (again, really? Is it really better than "Severed Hand"?), MFC (only with Untitled!), Parting Ways (What????), Whipping, Light Years, Rats, No Way (again, seriously?? How many good quality boots do you have with "No Way", let alone boots with "No Way" in general).

And I just picked out the obvious ones, non-personal ones. I personally believe that Severed Hand is better than Yellow Led, Small Town (actually my least favorite PJ song), Inside Job, Leash, WWS, Jeremy, Last Exit, among others.

That's not to say those songs are bad live, or that I'd rather see Severed Hand instead of those. I'd much rather see "No Way" live than "Severed Hand", even though I think Severed Hand is better live, if that makes any sense. I'm not saying Severed Hand is the best live song, I don't think it is, but I do think it's one of their better live performances. They just kill it every time they play it, personally right up there with DTE. Just a really freakin' solid song with some excellent drum and guitar work that edges out other fantastic PJ songs live. And, of course, it depends on the version/the night. Virginia Beach 2000 Daughter is going to beat Gorge Severed Hand any day of the week. Also, it's a matter of opinion and better is not a factual way to qualify things.

I agree with the OP. IMO SH is one of the must under appreciated songs in the collection. I would put it ahead of a lot of the 50 songs listed to hear at my next PJ concert.

oh i'm very serious. i'm a serious kind of guy. i don't mess around with listing a bands songs... :?

get yourself adelaide 2009 boot for no way. we could talk about the 2000 tour for many examples of tight versions of songs like of the girl and parting ways.. ie katowice 2 or alpine for of the girl versions.

you'll find 1 or 2 people that might disagree with you on oceans and in my tree being worse live songs than severed hand. as for rats, even if atlanta 94 version of rats was the only time they played it, it would still hold cred as a far superior live song to severed hand. rats has one of the best bass lines in the catalogue and an amazing outtro.

and yeh severed is solid, as you described it, but it is eons from being pearl jam's best live song. please enlighten us on how it is better than release, long road, animal, present tense, black, immortality and rvm. :D
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.

Severed Hand is not even in the same hemisphere as this, when Mike and Boom go off it is beyond epic, no offense but when you say the best, that is an awfully high bar to clear
