The Who at Glasto... Good sign or bad sign?

So whaddayathink. The Who have been confirmed for Glastonbury...

"Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has confirmed The Who are set to perform at his annual Somerset music festival.
However, he said the rock act were not the "biggest band in the world" he referred to in a recent BBC interview.
Mr Eavis confirmed The Who were poised to play after guitarist Pete Townshend told radio station Xfm that he and Roger Daltrey would be appearing."
Source: BBC News online

They're headlining on 24th June...

Would this be related to the rumours about PJ playing in the UK in June?
If so, are you happy?

I'm a bit worried. Glasto is great, but hard to get tickets for and way more expensive than a normal gig...
Like a cloud dropping rain
I'm discarding all thought
I'll dry up, leaving puddles on the ground
I'm like an opening band for the sun

PJ might be the biggest Band in the world for us, but I can guarantee you they're not who is talking about.

someone posted this in the UK thread, though without a source:
Anyone see Michael Eavis announcing the Glasto headliners last night?

    Interviewer: "What about Pearl Jam?"
Eavis: "No. I'd love them to play, but as far as I'm aware they're playing in London the week before hand so it wouldn't work."
haven't heard it anywhere else...but that would be VERY good news (not playing Glasto..and playing in London at least).

now if only they don't play anywhere in Europe at the same time, I can try to go and see the Who at Glasto without stressing too much if I don't manage to get tickets ;)

Good news, Pegasus. I'd say that would put an end to those Bonnaroo rumours, gives more credibility to the Poland date and gives more hope of more Euro gigs.

yes, I was starting to worry/doubt the last few days...

  • If all the UK gets is a festival apperance at Glasto I'll be annoyed. I know we should feel lucky whatever, but I know just how fricking impossible it is to get tickets. Even if they didnt announce the lineup beforehand, it would still sell out in 10 minutes. People go for the experience just as much as for the music.

If the quote in the other thread is true, that'd be great. A couple of shows in London, then maybe Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow?

I'd try and go to all of them.

the quote from the UK rumour thread is from an XFM interview i believe
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    no it's not.
XFM was a Pete Towsend interview...that prompted ME to confirm The Who (on BBC I think)

Scratchin A Letter heard it on Xfm last night and it was he who posted the info this morning...

I asked him where he had heard Michael Eavis mention Pearl Jam not playing Glasto but being in london the week before it... the link above was his answer

so i was only repeating what he said to me :)

http://www.xfm.co.uk/Article.asp?id=339374 XFM themselves don't seem to know about it..
I'm still trying to find anywhere that mentions it ..

    From the Glastonbury site: http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/

This is the interview where the snippet came from..... I think

"BBC Podcast interview with Michael Eavis

The latest BBC Radio 1 Entertainment News Podcast features an interview with Michael Eavis on his plans for this year's Festival, including information on the new ticket system and the proposed increased capacity.

The podcast goes live on Friday 19th of January and is free to download by clicking here."

al i'm saying is that Robin heard Michael Eavis being interviewed on Xfm (he thinks) last night around 1.00am and thats where Eavis said his bit about Pearl Jam

its most likely not on the website due to the fact that they wont have transcribed the entire interview... they have just focused in on the "news" items

i.e. The WHo, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Bjork are all playing.... mentioning PJ arent playing doesnt really make headlines in the world of music these days in the UK

    But this was also said....

", but Eavis also made mention of a very big classic (the "biggest band in the world" in fact) band that may also be playing the festival, saying,

"It might be their very last gig," Eavis explained. "I don't know, they're teasing us saying it might be their last show, I'm so excited about it."

SO... no with that in mind... no PJ at Glastonbury!
  • The same thing that xfm played was on MTV a while after.

It wasn't an exclusive PJ question though, the interviewer was naming feckloads of bands. My ears just started burning when I heard PJ. Unless there's a transcript, I can't help.

But if they DO end up laying Glast, don't blame me alright?

    he 'thinks' its XFM
..plus I think it's unlikely it was a live interview at 1am...they might just have been re-playing some interview he did somewhere else.

all I'm saying is that there's no mention of it on XFM website (no mention of an interview with Eavis...if you read the link I posted they mention interviews with BBC 6 Music and NME...they would have said if it was with them...they certainly boast of The Who one).
I'm trying to find another source... none of the festival forums seem to mention it, which I found strange.
BBC 6 say they are broadcasting the Eavis interview on sunday...and there's some Guardian journo interviewing Eavis tomorrow so Saturday's Guardian should carry some article.

just watched the MTV news segment with Eavis (online...and it's an MTV interview btw) and he doesn't mention PJ (Muse: no because they play Wembley Stadium the week before, Razorlight: no because they headline Reading, Kasabian: yes but not headlining, Kylie: no)...still looking.. :)

OK.. maybe not XFM (he did say he 'thinks' but the glastonbury site gives a link to an interview from 19th January which could be where this thing came from.

Nah not any more than usual.. I saw the MTV again a while ago and it's been cut down. He mentioned PJ, Kylie, Jesus and Mary Chain, Bjork, Radiohead and some others but in this one its just Razorlight, Muse Bjork etc... it was definitely that interview, they've just cut it to show the confirmations.

If that wasn't on Xfm then it has to have been on R2 or Virgin or something. I was barely paying attention, so I can't be of any more help..the point is, PJ are not going to play Glasto. Even if I can't back that up, it's pretty obvious.

the Last Gig comment was in reference to The Who, not to the 'Biggest Band' (I think it might be either The Police or the Rolling Stones)
  • Aren't the Stones supposed to be playing the dome during the summer? U2 aswell apparently.
  • pink floyd would be a treat...keep dreaming...:-(
