Toys!
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis asked 24,000 people to vote for their favorite toy of the past century by asking them which one they feel represents the “stories that define our childhood,” according to Yahoo Shine.

“The toys give us common ground and are good conversation starters involving the entire family,” Jeffrey Patchen, the museum’s president and CEO said in a press release. Plus, “toys are a powerful tool for exploration and imagination as we learn and grow.”

Museum curators took the results and compiled the top 20 into a list, all of which have been around for at least 25 years. The most popular toy might surprise you, unless you’re a little boy who likes to shoot thing things, that is.

1. GI Joe

2. Transformers

3. Lego

4. Barbie

5. View-Master

6. Bicycle

7. Cabbage Patch Kids

8. Crayons

9. Play-doh

10. Monopoly

Of ALL the toys out there why am I NOT surprised that a military orientated toy is #1 in this past century. :(

    Since when are bicycles toys?

Along with a bike, of those listed, I had Play-Doh (can still remember that nasty-salty taste of it, too!), Barbies, Monopoly, the ViewMaster (LOVED THAT!), and of course crayons (again though - a toy?).

I'm surprised Operation, Etch-a-Sketch, LiteBrite and a few others aren't on there.

Now I'm getting all nostalgic :D

My personal fave was Lego, without a doubt, followed closely by Transformers, which my parents would never buy me, so I traded lunch at school for Go-Bots, the poor second cousin of the Transformers. I suffered, oh how I suffered. :(
To make myself feel better, I would enjoy a rousing and incredibly noisy game of hungry hungry hippos to punish my parents for being so cheap. :D

No, they were awesome!!!! Namely because of the complete lack of anything else that was 3-D at the time - it was an actual treat to look at 3-D images. I remember loving this toy.

  • ah, you never said anything about 3D,

I don't think any of my favourite toys actually did anything

Haven't looked at it in about 20 years. :shifty:

    That's what I mean!

They WERE awesome...but the novelty wore off super fast. Every so often you'd flip thru it...then it would sit there for months again. I bought my kids one, I don't know if they ever used it. To me, a top 10 toy should be timeless. You can't put a f'n bike in the same category as a viewmaster.

And I agree that no star wars is a travesty! I'd be curious to see sales comparisons to GI Joe...I demand to see the demographics for these 24,000 people, damnit! ...and why this is based on a sample and not some kind of sales formula. crappy list.

Not all G.I Joes are alike. This is a true story:

There is a G.I. Joe who once was named Joe who once lived with some boys up in the State of Washington. One day a young woman who was close to me was helping those boys clean up around their place and she came across Joe. Joe was naked because the boys had lost his uniform and accoutrements.

Although I wasn't in the room at the time, this is what, to the best of my recollection, is what transpired:

The woman picked up Joe, looked at him and said, "Oh, my, you have no genitalia!"

"I know", Joe replied. "This is something many people do not realize about us plastic warriors. Never-the-less, I'm very embarrassed to be seen naked "

"Well, perhaps I can find your uniform but in the meantime I have a robe from another doll you can borrow."

"That would be most excellent, Ma'am".

The woman pulled the robe over Joe's head and put his arms in the sleeves and said, "Well there, at least you're decent now."

Suddenly Joe's eyes widened and his mouth hung open for a moment and in a very soft voice he said: "From now on my name is Max Lightening. I used to be a warrior but now... but now I'm NOT a warrior. I'm a man of peace." The scar on Max's right cheek, I'm told, became slightly more red but otherwise his face became very serene.

Max traveled with the woman and me for a few years after that until one day she and Max went there separate ways. I visited the two of them a while back and Max had changed very little. The scar on his face was still red but if anything, his appearance was even more calm and serene than I had remembered. Max only speaks to this one particular woman but I am told he has continued to devote his life to peace. He sincerely believes peace is possible.

Like I said, not all G.I. Joes are alike.
