just to throw some stats out there (these are the most current stats from RAINN) :
- 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12
- 29% are age 12-17
- 44% are under age 18

-93% of juvenile sexual assault victims know their attacker
- 34.2% of attackers were family members.
- 58.7% were acquaintances.
- Only 7% of the perpetrators were strangers to the victim.

RAINN also added some stats to their website about pregnancy resulting from rape.

And 54% of rapes were never reported to the police. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say this is an epidemic.

Unfortunately, pregnant 11-year-olds are not as uncommon in this country as people want to think. (And our denial isn't helping.) And I totally agree that "epidemic" is the right word to describe our sexual assault problem. :(

their is a negative stigma attached to rape that isn't so called 'violent' or 'forced'.. the stigma was highlighted nicely by the GOP last month.. the stigma of statutory rape is it's a 'lesser' form of assault. This is why the shit happens again and again.. it's a cycle people need to wake up before the GOP actually get in power and change rape laws.. anyway a little off topic. I can attest in my job that this is a fairly common situation.

Oh my goodness what do you do or what does this mother do in this situation? He must have been very sick in the head to be touching a 11 year old but stangely this occurs more often than people think. This in deed is a sad situation. :(

So since we're all in agreement that this is horrible & we're mostly in agreement that it's more prevelant than people think... What are we going to do about it? How are we all going to contribute to make this kind of thing less common? (Please don't say we can't do anything except not rape children ourselves.)

What to do about it? Very good question, and one I wish I could better answer.

I'll admit this kind of thing makes me see red.

The part of me that can remain level-headed? Well, for one (and likely easier said than done), I'd like to see scumbags like this NOT BE ARRESTED SO MANY TIMES AND RELEASED. This is where any shred of my empathy goes out the window and I fully support the three-strikes law...or two strikes, in this piece of shit's case.

I'd like parents to be more aware of and responsible with who they're bringing into their, and their children's lives.

(sidenote - another thing that irks the hell out of me: calling this "sexual assault". Let's call it what it is - RAPE...of a little girl, no less.)
