Saw an interesting poll on Yahoo! today:
A new survey shows U.S. global competitiveness has fallen again. What do you blame the most?
The education system (8172) - 15%
Washington/politics (28036) - 50%
China (2214) - 4%
Outsourcing (9477) - 17%
American parents (5498) - 10%
Pop culture (2411) - 4%
What do you all think of these results? I'm a little surprised myself, and as much as we all know Washington has it's problems, I think 50% of people blaming the government is a little bit unfair. Not because I think our foreign trade policies, tax laws, and regulatory agencies aren't in need of some tweaking, but I think it's sort of a self-absolution of personal responsibility, and an easy finger to point. Also surprising is the gap between "China" at 4% and "Outsourcing" at 17%. We all know that we outsource a great deal to India, Mexico, and that a lot of manufacturing, specifically textiles, takes place in South and Central America, but it really pales in comparison to our deficit with China. I actually voted pop culture - not necessarily as the overall root cause, but mainly because I feel that people are more concerned with it than educating themselves on what's really happening in the global marketplace. Again, this is a Yahoo! poll, so I do take it with a grain of salt.
So what do you all think...?
