I have zero knowedge when it comes to backing up hard drives...reloading software...all that BS. I think my laptop just shit the bed. I try booting it up and it just stays on the windows screen. I've mentioned taking it Best Buy here before but got shot down. What else would anyone recommend? I have stuff on there I don't want to lose. Thanks.

    Here's my advice:

you should find the best independent computer repair shop in the area. (NO BEST BUY) And you should tell them that the primary importance is to get the data off the computer and put the data on a NEW external drive.

DON'T mess with it. Don't try to fix it yourself- NOTHING to it -if you want to get your data.

My husband is in data recovery- and this is his advice.

once you get your data- then worry about fixing the computer.

    Well thank you.
  • the cheap option:

open up your laptop and take out your hard drive.
buy a cheap "laptop hard drive to usb" connector/case from ebay
plug it all in to another laptop or desktop
    transfer the data across

you can probably find some tutorials on youtube if necessary...
