Here's an interesting related article I came across last night:

    http://www.care2.com/causes/rage-agains ... -ryan.html

Rage Against the Machine Raging Against Paul Ryan

Shortly after Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., was picked as Mitt Romney’s running mate, it came out that Ryan was a big fan of Rage Against the Machine. While it’s not unusual for people around 40 to be fans of the rap metal group, Ryan’s love of the band was considered somewhat odd, given that Rage is loudly and openly leftist in their political leanings.

This is the band that featured Leonard Peltier in the video for their seminal hit “Freedom,” the band that has been avowedly pro-choice, the band that headlined a show opposite the 2008 Republican National Convention, in which they came on stage dressed as prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. They supported Occupy Wall Street and Mexico’s leftist EZLN rebels. To say that they have a somewhat different view of the world than the “pro-life as you get,” Medicare-slashing Ryan is an understatement.

Tom Morello, guitarist for the band, made that a flat statement on Thursday, penning an op-ed for Rolling Stone in which he said, “Paul Ryan’s love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades.”

Morello went further, adding, “Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn’t understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn’t understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine.”

Morello went on to say that while Ryan clearly didn’t get the band, he did understand rage:

Don’t mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta “rage” in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions.

Morello closed by saying that he hoped that Ryan was “a mole,” but that he wasn’t betting on it.

Paul Ryan has been featured in attack ads that show him throwing old people off cliffs. But being compared to evil people like Charles Manson, or Chris Christie? That’s got to sting.

Why? It's pretty close-minded to only like music that fits your ideology.

I don't agree with a lot of what RATM has to say, but good music is good music.

    from your posted article...

"You see, the super rich must rationalize having more than they could ever spend while millions of children in the U.S. go to bed hungry every night. So, when they look themselves in the mirror, they convince themselves that "Those people are undeserving. They're . . . lesser." Some of these guys on the extreme right are more cynical than Paul Ryan, but he seems to really believe in this stuff. This unbridled rage against those who have the least is a cornerstone of the Romney-Ryan ticket."

what a dumb . . . . . . :fp: they them these ... good lord and he thinks for some reason he is better :?

as far as music... does anyone ever really know anyone?

Music is interpreted and used by the listener as is needed in relation to themselves,
what they experience in life, what they believe,
not necessarily the author or creator, for most artists that is fine with them.

Music is really an extension of us all and can bring most of us to our knees.

Yeah I don't think Ed would be any different. Paul Ryan is the IT spokesman for conservative Republicans. He likes the music of one of the most left leaning politically mainstream rock bands of the 90's. Tom Morello is a Socialist. Makes perfect sense to me. I would expect nothing less. It would be like Dennis Kucinich saying he really digs Ted Nugent. What do you think Ted would say to that?

if I were an intertainer I think I would keep my political views and comments to myself, I mean really does it matter what Tom Morello thinks anyway ? does what he has to say affect my life or yours ?..what he says could very well affect his own life and that of record sales and the bottom line in every business is money.

Aside from the music creator's intention - which I do think is important (possibly in a personal, even selfish way, ie, what is the root, why these words, these notes) - absolutely agree with how we digest it. Its intimacy, how we embrace it, how we let it (or not) influence our lives.

By "releasing" one's music, it's implicity shared with all, and then is open to all's interpretations.

How fucking arrogant to claim that one shouldn't listen to certain music, or see it in a specific and limiting way.

tom morello is a political animal. he always has been. hes also never kept quiet on anything so of course hes gonna have an opinion on paul ryan saying he likes the music of toms band and of course we are all gonna hear that opinion. is it gonna make me respect him any more than i already do? no its not. is it gonna make me think he should just shut the hell up cause hes just a musician? no.... but then again tom morello has always been more than just a musician singing pretty mindless songs.

Yeah, the good parts of the Good Book for sure. I want them to re-do the movie "The Bible". Maybe put Marker in the Sand in there somewhere, Sade "Your Love Is King" for when David and Bathsheba get it on, Leslie West/Mountain during the parting of the sea and Jimi doing Wild Thing when Moses busts up those tablets and trashes the Golden Calf.

It really is an amazing number. One of Neil's finest moments. Just a guess here, but I doubt it would be found on Ryan's iPod. But if Jesus had an iPod-- oh yeah!

I know some men who don't listen to the lyrics at all ...
it's the music behind the words that drives them

and they sing their own lyrics to it while playing air instruments
I picture Ryan like this, he's a cute one alright and I bet he can really rock out :D

So that's what I'm saying. It's close minded.

Besides, lyrics can be interpreted however you like. Plus, I don't mind hearing other points of view even if I don't agree with them.

 nice try. you see it as close minded that i dont listen to music whose message i disagree with?? well im gonna have to disagree with that. music is too important to me to waste it on bullshit that will just aggravate me negatively. if i want a differing opinion on an issue ill read a book or a journal article... not listen to a musician. and that way i dont have to hear it in my music. and when it comes to RATM, interpretation isnt really much of an option for the majority of their songs.
