NYC towed my van and sold it with amps and equipment and so much art in it. It's a white 2003 dodge ram. Sold yesterday. Please help recover. Anyone with any knowledge or help (lawyers) into how to deal with a city taking and selling your stuff would be greatly appreciated. I just found out about this and cant think straight but so much priceless (to me) was inside. Over 40 large scale paintings rolled in canvas. I'm gutted.
...The van wasn't towed and sold the same day. It was towed from a place where it was getting repaired and sold when i was in Mexico under the impression that it was back at the shop.
City of New York says buy information is confidential, so if you have any info on Joseph Arthur's van -- maybe you bought it? -- you can contact him via his Facebook page. Hope your van/stuff back!

What a bizarre story. Why did the shop have it towed? Were they unable to reach him? How long was it there for? That sucks.

Good news - Joseph has got his van back! He posted this on his FB page earlier:
So after all this I got my van back!
I can't thank y'all enough for your support and help.
It cost plenty, but I'm very happy to have my art and my gear back.
Jose (the guy who had it) drove a hard bargain (Ron calls it a sort of hold up)
and sold it all back to me for $5,500 after he paid a grand for it,
but Im trying to keep it in perspective,
Things like this can't be measured strictly with numbers
and the life lessons it taught were of greater value than the dollars and cents.
The main one being the support I got from all of you.
Along with the people ,whom without I never would have gotten it back,
Ron, Vic, Lea, Carla, Julie, Peter, Kraig, Ehud and Spencer - THANK YOU!
The list goes on, but now i need to search this four wheel goliath for my tarot cards and try to catch new dreams.

Thanks again everyone and I hope to see you down the road.
I'll be the one driving a van more famous than me.

    much love,
    Joseph

    From dangerousminds.net
Now Joseph is not a wealthy guy. He should be. His albums are among the best released in the past two decades. But the music biz is tough as we all know. So, in order to recoup some of his losses, Joseph will doing a fundraiser at the City Winery in Manhattan on Sunday, October 21st. Joseph will be there with special guests.
Maybe an appearance from Jeff and Richard for a RNDM set?

I'm so glad he got his stuff back!
  • On Sunday, October 21, New York’s City Winery will host Joseph Arthur’s ‘Where Is My Van’ fundraiser. The musician/painter’s van was recently stolen, and Arthur now has to recoup the costs of buying back his own van. Arthur spent over $10,000 was on Private Investigator fees and what he describes as “classic shakedown in the Bronx.” R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck will perform at the fundraiser. The evening will double as Buck’s inaugural New York gig with his new solo band featuring Patti Smith Group’s Lenny Kaye, R.E.M. sideman/The Minus 5 leader Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin. Buck makes a cameo in Joseph Arthur’s video for the song “Where Is My Van”, hailed by Michael Stipe as the “fucking awesomest music video since “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
