SO I work with kids, and one boy knows of my love of Pearl Jam. He is fascinated with the posters (that sometimes gets delivered to my work), and I drew him one of the pj logos that copped a lot of flack here, but he loves it... he thinks it's the coolest thing.. I have exposed him to a bit of pj, (not much), but he likes whipping and Rockin' in the free world :D

So anyway, yesterday, I see him drawing away at something, and he then presented me with this... his Pearl Jam logo... and I think it is cool...

Ah 11 haha... as per thread title haha... Yeah they're great kids... I've known this kid since he was 5, a great boy... it's a shame that I only have about 3 and a bit months left as he has to move on as he is getting too old, and I will more than likely move on too...

oh...shit....haha my fault for not paying attention. :fp:

Yeah, I know how you feel. I've been working my job for 3 years mostly with Jr. High aged kids (grades 7-9) and it was gut wrenching for the kids I've known since they were in 7th grade move up to the high school. I often get visits from the high schoolers though. I'm sure you'll still hear from him again.

Yeah I get visits from kids too... which is great. But it's cause I have been in the same job, so they know where I am. But I should be finishing my teaching degree in February, so I'll probably move on too...

Good job on working with kids... they need good guidance. I am in the middle of designing a unit of work on smoking, encompassing the effects of it on the body, the financial implications, dealing with peer pressure as well as the effect of popular culture on people taking up smoking.. All inspired by working with these kids. Such an impressionable age, I just hope they'll make informed choices.

  • I'm working on my teaching degree too. My work is more after school recreation, but mentoring and guidance is a big part of what I do. My hobby (i guess you can call it a hobby) is sociology and I'm very much interested in adolescent deviance. Like why kids turn to drugs, alcohol, and sex and why it's so important. It's interesting because when I first meet my 7th graders, they seem so innocent but when you get to know them, and especially after 3 years, they can surprise you with their personal lives including sex, drugs, and alcohol.

Yeah that's the thing, so many children have different experiences... I work in quite a well off area in the North of Sydney, yet there is also housing commission near by so we get a mix of children. As well as that, I have done teaching practicals out in the West of Sydney... the area out there is very rough, and poor. High levels of multiculturalism, ghettos if you will. On the class I was on out there had 91% of children from a Non-English Speaking background, shootings every week. The stories from the children, Burmese trauma victims, and one boy who witnessed his fathers suicide, to an 11 year old boy who basically has to look after is twin 2-year old brothers.

I also went out for a prac in far-northern New South Wales where the school and 30% Indigenous Australians. I had never taught one Aboriginal student, though there were 30%. But, unfortunately with our Indigenous Australians, there are low-level of attendance as well as a multitude of other factors.

So such a mix of students and backgrounds, instability at home, whatever the case may be, you and I will be faced with being the only stable person in some of our students lives. So to be a positive role model is such an important thing.

    Good luck mate.

I too work in a semi-well-off town. It's in Long Island NY. We're in a part of the island that's not quite the Hamptons type rich, but there are a lot of lawyers and doctors and scientists working at the local govt laboratory. Here it's either the children are spoiled rotten and using daddy's money to go out and buy drugs, or the child is in a divorce situation and single parent trying to make ends meet in an middle/upper-middle class town and so the kids mooch off of their rich friend's drugs. The high school in my district is nicknamed "The Pharmacy" because that's where all the deals take place. It might not seem as blatantly at risk as your situation, but kids are getting their hands on these drugs in both situations. It's up to us to show them a better path. Sometimes we fail, but we try our damnedest because we will sure as hell be damned if we don't. It's all about keeping the kids occupied in a positive way.

And thank you for your best wishes. I wish you the best of luck as well.
