Cancer has been cured, everyone drives electric cars, paraplegics get up and walk and the Soviets are colonising Mars — welcome to the year 2012.

Or not.

We searched through news archives from the past 30 years to find articles which predicted what life would be like now.

While they may not have guessed we’d be using iPads and proving the existence of the Higgs Boson, it’s clear people expected much more from our civilisation.

Here’s a list of the lofty heights we were expected to have reached by the year 2012:
