i have generally been on the fence about this ...

i do believe private clubs can discriminate ... hence that is why they are private ... i also do think that something that is somewhat of a national treasure like augusta national should consider its place in the american landscape and probably not be one of those clubs ...

That's the positive thinking we all need!!!!

Yeah, it's about time. But it's time to be happy for the change, even if it took to long.

no.. change for the better is great but that law should have never been enforced.

So, tell me how you feel about the female only workout places?

I think polaris said it pretty well earlier.

I agree but I'm curious- what law was involved here? If it was a legal issue- that even more reinforces that idea that this should have changed a long time ago. It's almost like this story is 30 years old and only just now surfaced.

There is no government law involved. Just a private clubs on rules/regs.

  • I'll prepare to get slain here. I am not sexist- consistently throughout this forum and life, I have insisted that men are the root of all problems in the world today. As a male, I stand by this assertion- it's the truth.

It really doesn't make a difference to me, but I don't understand why some women feel that they are being discriminated against as it has pertained to the Augusta situation? I mean... if we are talking about job selection or something significant towards quality of life... then hey... equality of course; but we are talking about a golf course catering to men (a pretty awesome course I'll give you that!).

If this attitude was prevalent in many courses, then I'd be inclined to suggest there is a real issue here. I believe there are about a dozen or so courses in the US that restrict membership to men. This is not a nation-wide problem of epidemic proportion.

If an awesome golf course was designed to be exclusive to women clientele, then I would respect that. To that end, I see 'Lady's Only Fitness' and tons of other clubs that cater to women only and, as a man, I do not feel slighted against in the least. I wouldn't think to challenge them. I actually think they are cool.

This is not a heroic victory for social rights on a Rosa Parks' scale. To me, this is pettiness.

    I'll duck now I guess.

I don't see why it's an issue. The ladies can go to the club with their husbands right?

I KID, I KID! Take it easy! I'm happy for the ladies who are new members.

Augusta National discriminates against me because I suck at golf and have little money.

This has zero implication for my life. So I really don't care how many women or if they're the "right" women, whatever.

I think it was Groucho Marx who said he wouldn't want to belong to any club who'd have him for a member.

I'm kind of on the same page with this one but mainly because I feel the same about golf as George Carlin: "Pick the damn thing up, stick it your pocket and go home and consider yourself lucky to have found it!"

oops- no offense intended, golf fans.

    Augusta National's Social Progress

Augusta National Golf Club finally extended membership to women on Aug. 20, 2012, admitting Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore. Onion Sports takes a look at the club’s 80-year history of enlightenment and tolerance.

1935: Unknowingly admits first gay member
1940: Permits wives of members to sniff grass on shoes of male members after they leave the premises
    1964: Lynching tree removed
    1975: Begins paying black employees
1983: Players are no longer required to use Augusta’s all-black club caddies at the Masters, though white caddies still must dance and play the jug in between holes
1987: Official handicap parking sign installed, replacing previous one that just made a lot of fun of disabled people
1990: Ron Townsend becomes the first black member of Augusta after assuring the governing board that he is rich, unpleasant, and disparaging toward women
1997: Tiger Woods breaks down Augusta’s racial barriers by becoming the first Thai man to win the Masters
2012: Extends invitations to two women for the first time in its history, a testament to the notion that the club’s attitudes have progressed into last century
