I don't know which term I like better - Pussy Riot or hooliganism.

Pretty fucked up that some people can't speak their mind, freely, without legal repercussions.

The Putin government is a glorified dictatorship... they are heading down the same road the soviet union did. Hardly a free speech nation.

Does anyone know if the 5 months they've been in custody goes toward their sentence, and is the parole in Russia? could they get out early?

But it wasnt' about free speech, was it? It was hooliganism... They 'broke in' a private part of the church, did their slutty stuff in front of church goers and insulted everyone on the way. No, no - nothing to do with criticism of Putin in a song....

"The offence was performed by way of an action driven by the will of the culprits to show their disrespect of the others. It was identified that on Feb 21 2012, Tolokonnikova, Samutsevich and Alekhina unlawfully entered a sealed part of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral reserved for a religious ceremonies and hoist themselves in front of the altar which is reserved specifically for clergy members occupied the cathedral, and [started] reading prayers and other religious texts and inserted dancing and chanting which were insulting for religious believers.

As they danced they swung they hands and imitated punching unseen enemies..."

In some countries you can't say what you want--that includes the United States by the way. If you guys think there aren't free speech cases here then you are misguided. Just because lots of these cases include scary words like 'terrorism' does not mean they are not free speech cases all the way. It only means the U.S. government can better disguise it.

Before you get all high and mighty on countries abroad, why don't you focus on your own?

ummmm  what to say ? ...well fuck the story was about a band in Russia that pushes the bounds just a little knowing full well what the repurcissions may be (can you imagine Dave Mustain or even Eddy of PJ having to live and perform in Russia), BUT they stood up for what they thought was right and unfortunatly the Russian police diden't see it that way and I coulden't agree with you more fuck that maybe all of us should mind our own business in our own countries and that being the case fuck where are you from ? IF you are not a US citizen why on eart are you on the train that has many topics about American politics.
exactly what does "high and mighty" mean...remember this is the train so you can speak freely as long as follow the guide lines

I know what the story was about. I was expecting someone to post it on here eventually, because stories like these make us Americans feel better about ourselves. Yeah, the economy might be shit, but we still have freedom, right? We're still the good guys out there, pushing our great values of freedom of speech to everyone who will listen! Give me a break. Don't act like this posting a story like this and saying, "in some countries you can't say what you want" was not a clear point that the United States is somehow better than Russia.

In my opinion, the topic always had a reference to the U.S. from the very first sentence of the OP! Plenty of people reading and responding to this story have the U.S. in mind, as somehow being 'better' than what just happened in Russia.

Petitions didn't work. Donations to send balaclavas to Putin in protest. Not that it will do much, sadly. Putin is old-school KGB....

I think I see what fuck is getting at here- to me there does seem to be an implied "we're cool/ they're not" slant to the OP. But I'd like to hear from Godfather on this. Just to clarify, what is your intention here, GF? What's your take on freedom of speech here vs there?

i dont know what Godfather had in mind, but my opinion is there is NO freedom of speech anywhere..
we think we have this..govertments and power in general, they can make u and your freedom disapear in a minute..we all have limits of that freedom of speech...
some countries, just play it more free than other,or hide it..
but if u seriously try to play with the system..you are fucked..

You don't have to say it... I can tell.
Anyway, we are going to see the Ed Helms music/comedy at the Largo on La Cienega, tonight. We are probably going to go for the Pho next door for dinner... you're welcomed to join us. Largo is one block North of the Beverly Center on La Cienega.

Also, August 30th, Jack Black joins Sister-in-Law Petra in Megan Mullaly's band at Largo. Consider a ticket.

Brian, I really had no intent of saying America is better in any way,
all the talk on this forum about rights and other countries is what prompted my post,it was just a way to say hay !
look what's really going on, I'm not really all that well worded  and with my position on other issues and being a proud American I can understand why some of you might think I was pushing the American thing.

It's not my problem for sure... and we certainly have our own problems here... I'm all for freedom of speech and a lot more freedom in this country in general.

BUT, from studying history, it interesting to me when I see a person has been in two very powerful positions for 13 years... and his lackey Medvedev by his side as they flip flop "roles"... we all know who has really been in charge.

It saddens me because Russia really turned around after the fall of the Soviet Union... after years and years of strong central control... having a leader that put his own soldiers into gulags out of paranoia... to a more free Russia, freedom of press... it seems like they have turned backwards again.

It doesn't really shock me... but it's certainly very interesting and a little bit sad.

2 years for that? No. That wouldn't happen here... 2 years for being a hooligan is insane.

I hope those girls get some support are set free. It would be cool for them to tour the US and show us their stuff. Hey, I mean music. You knew I meant that... right?
