I suppose because of my comments and opinion I have been labeled a Republican...
when I actually like ideas on both sides but I've never really concidered myself on or the other
but this election I find myself leaning heavly towards the republican side because my job my livelyhood
depends largly on military spending not to mention I have always believed two of the most important things in our country are education and military.I'll tell ya making a discisson when it come time to vote in a president
is a personal thing as much as it is a "good for all thing" and I find it hard to falt anybody for their vote but ya gotta vote that's the bottom line,we vote for personal reasons and if we don't then we have no room to bitch right ?

Some could say I'm voting against my best interest, because it's possible (hopefully probable) that our family income could rise to the point where Obama's planning on raising our taxes.

But I think an Obama win would be better for the country overall, specifically better for the planet. I just don't see how any issue could be more important than that. I have two little kids who could easily live until 2100 and I would like for them to have a habitable place to live their whole lives.

We've all got our issues that are important to us, right?

I find it disappointing that, in the end, a lot of us vote for the 'lesser of two evils'. No real choice - it always ends up a 'choice' between two major parties (in most western countries) as the smaller ones have absolutely no chance of winning, even getting close to it.

So what to do? 'Waste' a vote on a party that you would support but you know won't end up having any impact on policies, or vote for one of the two main parties - the one that offends you the least?

Yes! Voting for a healthy planet for our kids seems like the responsible thing to do. I'm not sure Obama has shown that he is as concerned about the planet as I'd like him to be but if the choice that way is Obama vs Romney, Obama clearly seems to me to be the best choice.

Social and economic issues are important but, as Yvon Chouinard once pointed out, without a healthy planet to live on there could not be any social or economic issues to worry about.

He's taken some decent steps. Baby steps if you will. I certainly wish more would have been done, but it certainly is an improvement over the W Administration.

Of all the things in the current Republican party, the opposition to practically any environmentally friendly action is just mystifying to me.

I fall under the "or....." category.

And it seems like these political discussions - usually (thankfully, not always) flinging shit to and from the left, the right and the middle - aren't that much different from those concerning religion. Many are quick to make assumptions, stereotype, badmouth, cheerlead, etc. I'm not talking specifically about this forum, but I've seen it here too.

redrock, you're right. It typically does come down to "the lesser of" situation, for me. And it's too damn bad.

dimitris - not a whole lot actually get their asses to the voting booths on election days! -- which is why I always go the absentee ballot route ;)

I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I like some ideas from both parties but unfortunately many points from both parties I disagree with. Still not sure who I will vote for.

But living in Oregon it doesn't matter. Our Electoral College votes will go to Obama.

Not enough. And some people in this country are doing things to make it harder for people to vote.

My state has a new voter identification law, and poll workers have received no information about how it's supposed to work, less than 3 months before the election. It's going to be a catastrophe. Hopefully a court overturns it before that happens. (all that said I don't think the ID law will affect the results of the election, but it will disenfranchise people)

Looking at the US from the 'outside' I also really need to consider how they deal with the rest of the world, their foreign policies and impact of these, not only in the US but the worldwide repercussions. Maybe something that those living in the US may not see at important.

Once you become a citizen and lived here for 30 days you can vote in the Presidential election.
Permanent residents not citizens are not allowed to vote in the Presidential election.

    If I understand correctly.

I think you need to be a US Citizen to vote. It may vary by state. I have no idea how long it takes for that to happen. I think our immigration laws are all whacked and nobody can figure out how to fix them. Give credit to Bush who actually tried and was stymied by people in his own party. Other people I'm sure are much more knowledgeable on this topic than me.

It's a joke here. Portland, very liberal, controls the entire state politically just because of the numbers. If you ever watched the show Portlandia, it is not that far off :o

The rest of the state, with the exception of the college towns, is mostly conservative.

Just read another site and it states you must live in the US 5 years before being eligible to take the citizen's test.

This is correct. If you marry a US citizen you are eligible for citizenship after 3 years instead of 5. In my experience, INS takes a bit longer than this to process applications, so the actual time can be a bit longer.
