Obama's Clean Energy Revolution

I can see why oil & gas Republicans are panicking and keep droning on about a single solar energy company that went bankrupt. They are threatened. Quick question, how many railroads in the 19th Century went bankrupt? How many oil companies and car companies in the 20th Century went bankrupt? How many dot-coms went belly-up in the 21st Century. That's how booms go. Anyway, I was surprised by the stats in this article, since Obama gets virtually no credit for alternative energy.

we have not found a reliable source of alt. power and there is really no way we could operate without oil at this point infact I'm willing to bet we don't cut our depandancy totaly from oil for at least 100 years maybe 200 years and by that time we will not have a choice anyway, oil is still the cheapest way to go.
the transportaion industry is in no way even close to being ready for power without oil,if you stop trucking, shipping and flight this country's economy will fal lflat on its ass.
unfortunatly oil is still king, far beyond the money and greed linked to oil we just can't survive without it at this point and that's why they have us by the balls and the scam of wind power is is just a tool to sell the not so near future to us...it is a step in the right direction but it's not replacing fuel yet.
well that's my opinion anyway. :D

You're right, we couldn't possibly stop using oil today, right here, right now. But we have to keep moving forward and use wind and the sun so we are less dependent on polluting energy and unstable governments. Ending wind tax credits, as Willard wants to do, will completely stop the progress we've made.

I think our opinions on this are much closer than either of us would like to admit. ;)

the only reason people oppose alternative energy is because the wind, water, and solar are not commodities that can be purchased, owned, and sold for profit. plus, these are all of infinite supply, so there can be no price fulctuations as dictated by a market. this is bad for big business and bad for energy companies. AND, infrastructure jobs would have to be created to make these things easily usable by the public, and that would have to be government having to create these jobs, which is also bad.... therefore it is bad for america....

I think you're right about our/your opinions and we will need alt power eventually for sure and the work being done is a great step forward but I also feel the alt energy program is being used like a weapon on the on the working class tax payers.

Gimmi it has nothing to do with politics man I promice.
I think wind power is a limited source of energy and there are too many things that will effect the operations of wind power that can put a screamming stop to life as we are accustom to, it's too early to rely on alt energy for our power.

    actually everything is political unfortunately.

NEVER underestimate the power and influence of the oil lobby. never.

i agree we can not quit fossil fuels cold turkey. it has to be a gradual drawdown while we transition. but we have to get working on it yesterday so that we can transition sooner than later.

Any state in this chart would be clearly interested in clean energy subsidies continuing, regardless of party.

Surprised to see Cali so far down on the chart. Looks like it's up to conservative Midwest states to pull the weight. :)

One note on government subsidies. I work in the renewable energy sector and ever since the ethanol and biodiesel credits went away, in the words of Lt. Aldo Raine, "Business has been booming".

Wow. Big old love fest in this thread.

Funny how so many red states have so much wind energy production. Romney opposing the wind tax credit is really dumb. He has gone WAY too far in pandering to the Tea Party.

Also sadly ironic how red states will be disproportionately affected by climate change.

This is a new form of renewable energy that I can get behind and support!

    8-)party0005.gif

Alaska brewery powered by … beer

A brewery is Alaska is being fueled by its own beer – in a manner of speaking.

The Alaskan Brewing Co. (ABC) plans to use spent grain from the brewing process to help power the majority of the brewery’s functions and reduce energy costs by 70 percent.

"We had to be a little more innovative just so that we could do what we love to do, but do it where we're located," ABC co-founder Geoff Larson told the Associated Press.

The process works using an expensive broiler system purchased by the brewery, which will convert the grain into steam. Or, as the ABC officials put it, they are now creating, “beer-powered beer,” in one of the nation’s largest craft breweries.

And even though the brewery spent $1.8 million on the broiler, minus a $500,000 federal grant, it is expected to save the company money over the long run. Brandon Smith, the brewery’s operations and engineering manager, says the new broiler will save his company about $450,000 per year.

“Renewable energy is one of the integral components to Alaska’s future. The new steam boiler at ABC is a great example of a forward-thinking approach to harnessing a new fuel source,” Alaska Rural Development State Director Jim Nordlund said in a statement on the U.S. Department of Agriculture website. “We’re happy to have played a part in this company’s innovation.”

Most breweries sell their spent grains to local farms for a profit. But because of the Alaskan brewery’s remote location, drying and shipping the grain was proving to be both expensive and wasteful.
