Though I wonder how he would know that the company needs dramatic policy changes...perhaps it was just 1 employee not following the policy, as it appears to be.
Maybe unemployment is too low if this is the help you have to hire.
Seems a matter of one idiot with a lack of compassion or manners.
Why would you fire her based on 1 side of the storey?
Maybe the hotel needs to address this situation in their policies...and make sure their employees are educated and Informed to the needs of people's in this situation.
She doesn't need to be fired for what might have been a simple lapse in judgement.

You know, people bring this up all the time (lack of training, etc.) and I would say it is probably part of the problem in roughly 5% of incidents that I've been associated with investigating.
It's the easy way out and more often than not, really is about personal accountability for the individual who didn;t take the training they got seriously. Just my point of view.
From my point of view is as society I don't think it fair to suggest she be fired based on his side of the story only, and if she was in the wrong on this instance of poor judgement, unless this is a on going problem.
I am suggesting that the company policy is up to date and employees are trained properly. From my experience very few low skill, low paying jobs train their employees well.
Another thing to consider is that some of these folks in wheelchairs carry a chip on their shoulder and are pissed at the world.
My wife and I are avid walkers and have encountered are fair share of rude people in wheelchairs. Two sides to every storey.

I agree about the 2 sides. I actually mentioned it in my first post. I was addressing the "lack of training" excuse. BUt fair enough, my experiences tell me otherwise.
o.k judge wagnor..you're right please forgive my nonentary lapse in judgment.

Now you're fired.
Kind of funny that your basing the fact that someone should be fired from 1 side of the storey and relying on a Fox News as a reliable source... :fp:

I was in a wheelchair for a year w/ 2 broken legs and a broken arm. It's unbelievable how differently you are treated by the walking public, but I was never treated as poorly as this guy. (I must also say that some people treated me very nicely and were extremely helpful).
Without a doubt she should be fired. He was not helped, and as a customer needing assistance, he should have gotten the help he needed. That's enough story to warrant firing an employee not doing her job. This isn't about two sides of the story; the customer really is always right.
the lady at the front desk (from what i read. and only a one sided story) made a mistake and shown very little compassion towards a disabled human being. and even though the story is one sided it makes sense so i will believe that this is exactly what happened.
should she be fired? no. why? because we don't know every detail. is she a fucking lazy ass heartless bitch? yes she is according to what i read, she is a piece of shit.
what other side of the story can make her look good and that she was doing her job to the best of her ability?
should she be put on probation at her place of employment? sure. should they revamp certain procedures at this hotel? certainly.
i use a cane and i move along very slowly and have huge pain & difficulty when walking or sitting perfectly still. i walk daily around my neighborhood and park along with my swimming. almost on a daily basis i have to fight none disabled folks at keeping them out of the two disabled changing rooms at the gym where i swim at.
the men's locker room is up 2-3 flights of stairs. i can't walk down stairs very well at all. i actually have to almost do as this man in this story does. i don't have to sit on my ass to go down the stairs, no... but close enough. i gotta lean my body into the railing and inch myself down very slowly.
why? because perfectly healthy & very fit people are using a changing room that was built for folks like this disabled vet guy and folks like myself who are a bit jammed up. my knees are mush. you'd think ppl at a place of health & excercise would go the extra steps... no they don't. many do, yes. but others do not.
me? yes i go the extra distance because i am very determined unlike some other folks. i feel bad for this guy who had to go through this bullshit. he is strong-willed

beings you are originally from Australia and now a u.s. citizen, do you see a difference between the two societies, is the u.s. less compassionate than your native homeland?

It's tough to say to be honest.. every community or country has it's bad apples. So no I can't really say America has less compassionate people.. I would say Australians are more laid back but that doesn't necessarily translate to Aussies being more empathetic and compassionate people. Prejudice is as common in Australia as it is here.

I agree with what your saying if that is the truthful storey from the article. Let's remember one thing, the hotel has accepted responsibility and taken the high road...basically the customer is always right.
As someone who has worked in the service industry before...the customer is not always right.
I also find it very amusing that peoples are basing their opinions on an article from fox news, a source that is usually not taken seriuosly on these boards.

--Why were they even talking to a clerk and not the manager? How is it that he and his Dad didn't need hotel assistance to get him down 3 flights of steps, and only demanded help with his bags and chair? The article is kind of confusing as to whether he was on the 1st floor or the 3rd floor when he made the call.
--Sliding down stairs seems as though this was something he normally did, probably at home. A person just doesn't throw their self down 3 flights of steps because some clerk pissed them off. If this was the first time he was going to slide down some steps, and to be doing it because he was angry and upset, as his Dad, I'd would have been freaked. Instead, they are were pissed because his Dad would have to get the chair and luggage, WTF.
--Again, why didn't the Dad just go to the front desk for assistance?
--Here's the liability issues,
a) yes a hotel employee can help a person with their luggage, however, transporting a wheelchair could present a liability issue if the chair is not properly setup before the person is placed back into that chair. With so many variety of chairs and their functions, a hotel employee would not know to check to see if they may have inadvertently moved a safety lock, but a person looking to make a couple of bucks off a hotel, well that's another story.
b) this person just elected to slide down 1 or 2 flights of stairs, as an employee or guest, I would not offer any assistance in placing him back into that chair or moving him once he got back into the chair. But, go ahead help him, and, while you think you are doing your patriotic duty, don't be surprised to fine yourself being served papers a couple weeks later.
