So, your 401(k) going up isn't a good thing? Your college education fund for your kids going up is a bad thing?

And, for your totally cynical view on this - if all them bankers buy yachts, who's going to build them? Who's getting the commissions on the sale of them? Who's going to take care of them? Where are they going to dock them? Sounds like quite a few jobs gained from even your purely cynical view of things.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

True that. I remember the luxury tax and what a failure that was about 20 years ago. You want a yacht? buy a used one. No tax. So, people stopped building yachts. people lost jobs. Wealthy still had yachts.

Okay... since your article deals with YACHTS... let's talk about Yachts and other luxury items.
Now... do rich people stop buying yachts and diamonds and fur coats and caviar because they don't want to pay the taxes?
I mean, they still WANT the yachts and diamond and shit, don't they? Is it because they can't afford the taxes?
    ...
I mean, what is keeping you from buying a yacht? The taxes on it? For me, other than the fact that I don't want a fucking yacht, it's the fucking expense. I just can't afford a yacht.

That is like saying "rich people" don't care about a 10% increase on their purchases. You really don't know that they do? It makes the decision to purchase a used yacht more compelling. And, a $100,000 "yacht" aint shit and that was the threshold.

It's like saying "rich people" can afford more income tax, cap gains tax etc and that won't affect their investment decisions. It does.

I would love to have a boat here but LA aint so grand for boating. Lake Michigan is where i roll heavy.

I'm far more ok with a consumption tax than with income taxes, is that just me?

Um... I'm not saying anything. Because I'm not a rich person, so, i don't know. I'm asking you.
What keeps you from buying a yacht? Is it because you can't afford the taxes? Or because you can't afford the yacht?

Me too. But, I'm sure you realize that saying a rich person doesn't make financial decisions based on the TOTAL cost of things is beyond silly. Adding cost (a tax, a handling fee, whatever) does affect that decision.

Some rich people fall into it without a clue in the world. But, most rich people (to use the term being so loosely thrown around which I have no idea what the definition is, but obivously our supreme leader does) got rich for a reason. They know how to make financial decisions (and no, that is not saying the converse is true that if you are not whatever rich is you don't know how to make those decisions).

When I buy concert tickets, I look at the total cost including surcharges, etc. and not just the "face value." When I buy a tv, I consider the taxes into the cost. I even round UP gas prices and am not fooled by the .9 cents American gas stations continue to use for whatever bizarre reason. But, looking at the total cost of things may be just silly ole' me.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

How do you know you're not rich? Don't worry. Obama will let you know.

In general, the answer to your question is yes to both. Especially since the last question includes the tax question. Isn't part of affording a yacht the ability to pay the taxes?

But, I'm with you. I have no desire to own a yacht. Anyone I know who's owned a boat tells me in not so many words that the boat in fact owns you.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Especially if you are a successful business person. Who would want someone that knows how to run a business AND the laws and regulations to run the country?

See. We can agree on things from time to time.
My point being, the market of the rich is far different from the market we are familiar with. Like, I bet it's been a while since the CEO of BP went to Costco to try to score a deal on a flat screen.
    ...
And yes.. the recession is over. As long as you are employed.
That was the message of the billboard. Wall Street is dong fine and those of us working Joe's 401K have healed... but, there is a lot of unemployment. Main Street is not doing so good.
That was the message... or am I wrong, here?

    OH the POOR DEARS.

How will Anne Romney ever cope with the shame of having to buy a used yacht? Oh... she'll never be able to show her face at the Country Club again. She may as well wear used diamonds or wear a pair of shoes TWICE!!

I just can't imagine the horrors that poor woman has been through.

And as she's said... "we've give all you people all you need to know about our financial situation."

It's clearly wearing on her. She looks like she hasn't had a facial since like... Tuesday.
