Songs that remind you of.....

Somewhere, something, or someone. Like, I was
listening to Live's Throwing Copper earlier today,
and I got to the song Shit Town, and it totally made
me think of Hemet CA. Not so much because that
album came out while I was still living there, but
because the song SOOOOOOOO describes the town
and what it was like to live there. Just like
Elderly Woman makes me think of when I run
into people I grew up with in Idyllwild CA. And
Rear view Mirror reminds me of my biological mother
and my step father, as does the song Daughter.

So I guess I was just wondering what songs affect everyone
else this way. Songs that remind you of a person place
or thing... or time not so much due to associative
memory, but simply cause the song fits these things...

The whole Avocado Album reminds me of the horrible 10 weeks I spent in the hospital... The album came out mid-stay, and I had listened to it alot. I associated the pain of the hospital with this album alot more than I had thought. I didn't like these songs for the longest time. But recently I was able to relisten, and find new meanings in them, and no longer associate the songs with the hospital.

During that same hospital stay I also watched the touring band 200 DVD alot. Like, almost everyday. And I don't associate every song on that DVD, I definitely do for the opening song. Long Road. Normally I would fall asleep relatively fast after it was put on, but I was always awake for long road because it was first...

Awesome thread! And I used to LOVE Throwing Copper, gonna have to give that a listen again soon :D

Every time I hear the song 3 Libras from A Perfect Circle it reminds me of this guy that I casually dated years ago. I was getting over a really bad breakup and started seeing this one guy to get my mind off of it (yeah bad but I was like 20 years old...). I didn't take the relationship seriously, even though we spent a lot of time together. He was wanting to make it more serious and I totally didn't see it at all because I was still getting over my ex. At one point, he told me to read the lyrics to 3 Libras and I didn't realize until much later that the lyrics described how he felt about me. There could be many interpretations of the song, but for me it's always been about someone that's in love with someone else who has been dealt such a tragedy that they don't even see that the person in front of them loves them.

Of course when I realized all this and was ready to make it a serious go, he had found someone else who he's currently married to.

    And so it goes!

  • When I had my horse accident, No Code had just
come out, and I was still trying to process
dealing with the issues of my family dynamics,
and the album came out about 3 weeks before
I was crushed, I had latched onto the song Present
Tense as an inspiration to let my shitty past go and
live in the now. Then I was crushed by one of the
horses I was training, and suddenly that song took
this demented turn, and I actually found myself
pissed off at thievery intro to the song, and often
Made people fast forward through it for me. Iwas just
so distressed at having lost my bussiness, lying
prone, and in traction while the bank foreclosed on
my property, sold off all of my horses, equipment,
And vehicles, and I'dcry convulsively wondering how
THIS particular "Present Tense" was so much better?
So I know what you mean about that relation. Years
later, now I realize that my original attachment
to this song was correct, and continue to live by those
    Words. Thanks for sharing that.

Riot Act reminds me of driving to high school. This album came out just a few months before I got my license and I played it a ton of times in that first semester of driving.

I won't talk about it here...but certain songs by STP...
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

  • Release. Reminds me of a shit ton of things, some days
I find that song very difficult to sit through for
the tears it brings. There's just been so many things
that I've had to let go of, and many more things that leave
me awake at night "waiting in the dark" for answers
as to what my lesson was supposed to be. But mostly
it ties in with Present Tense on the family issues. I think
sometimes with certain songs (as I'm sure we all do), that
Pearl Jam as a whole created them just cause they knew
someone out there needed to hear what the song
Had to offer, Release is truly one of those songs for me. And as
for Alpine I am so sad that I had to miss that!!
  • My little brother used to listen to Tom Petty - Wildflowers on repeat to fall asleep. He passed away in 2001 (19yrs old) in a car wreck.

I was with my gf at the time and her parents at the show a couple years back and a bunch of water starting coming out of my eyes for no reason when that song played. I couldn't explain to them why.
It made me happy and sad at the same time.
    Power of music

Everytime I hear "Not For You" I think of an old friend of mine from France who thought Eddie was saying "Mrs. Doubtfire" and not "This is not for you".
  • Great Thread! I proposed to my wife on some backstreet in St. Augustine on a warm Autumn night and I could hear the song Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones playing at a distant bar. I'll never forget that moment. Come to think of it, maybe it was the song that prompted me to pop the question then and there.
