13 Years Ago Today. Pearl Jam in Ireland

Just thought I'd share some memories of my first PJ show, July 10th 1993.

My cousin won two tickets to Slane Castle '93 - The Blue Angels (whoever the fuck they are), James, 4 Non-Blondes (AH-HAHAHAHA!!!), The Saw Doctors (AH-HAHAHAHA!!!AH-HAHAHAHA!!! but the first moshpit of the day, complete with bales of hay thrown into the crowd), Van Morrison, with Ray Charles on piano... and then Pearl Jam opening for Neil Young. My cousin has the worst taste in music and only went because she won the tickets, but I was more than ready to use her to see PJ. With Jeremy still all over MTV, I was expecting corduroy-jacket-and combat-cutoff-wearing-scaffolding-swingin' Ed, but instead we get an almost unrecognisable denim-clad, bob-haired dude who stood stock still at the mike for most of the show, whch was only fifty minutes long. Still, what a fifty minutes!

They roared straight into it with a chaotic hell-for-leather version of Why Go, and then straight into Jeremy, which predictably got everyone singing, as did Even Flow which came next. The crowd was manic and towards the end of EF, the barrier collapsed an loads of people went down(which is really disturbing in retrospect of Roskilde). Eddie yelled at the band to stop the performance until everyone got up. “Look out for each other. It’s a good day to be best friends,” he told the crowd, as they kicked back in right from where they stopped. then Ed strapped on a guitar, which was something else new for me. They played this really driving new song that I thought sounded incredible, but I couldn't really concentrate on it because there was a crowd surge and I heard this yelp behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see this girl right behind me - actually, pinned against me - had passed out and I had to help her boyfriend carry her out of the crush. And then I plunged straight back in for the rest of Rearviewmirror (that's what the song was.)

Eddie seemed really drunk throughout, often slurring his words, but the whole band was on fire, particularly towards the end. Another new one, a gorgeous slow ballad - Small Town - was up next and took some of the steam out of the crowd, thankfully. But then Once fired things right back up again. Ed introduced Glorified G as a song “about stupid Americans with big guns.” Before “Daughter”, he asked if he can tell the crowd something about grunge. “It has nothing to do with music. It just has to do with what’s on your teeth.” We were all a bit bemused, but he continued “And you know what? I think grunge was invented here.” A predictable roar from the crowd. From my bootleg tape of the show, I can tell that Daughter had a tag, but of course I didn't know that at the time. I still don't know what that tag was - something about how "they might as well be dead/when the rain comes". Anyone know what this is? Some of the new songs were lost on the crowd who just wanted to hear Ten, so you can imagine how nuts they went (me too) when Alive kiced in. it was an absolutely furious performance, Mike going nuts, and Ed still doing the fist-pumping YEAH!s at the end. After apologising for not having played Ireland before ("we just had no fuckin' idea how cool it was") and promising to come back and play two weeks of club shows (still waiting...), they played what is still one of the most intense versions of Porch I have ever, ever heard with Eddie roaring himself hoarse to the words of Henry Rollins’ “Tearing” in the midsection,

Its so hard to deal with the ones who ain't real
They continually blow my mind
My fuckin mind!

And then they slow it down...

They don't mean to do it
you don't mean to do it
But you're tearing each other apart
We're tearing each other apart
You're tearing yourselves apart
We're tearing ourselves apart

Then he jumped into the photo pit and surfed a little at the front of the crowd (if memory serves), and the song ended in a blazing guitar squall, with Eddie howling like a maniac over the top.

Coming out for the encore, Eddie said hi from U2 (who they had been supporting in Italy before this show), and introduces a raucous version of “Baba O’Riley” by simply saying “This song is not by U2”. I didn't know this song at the time, but I though it was an amazing finisher, and still do.

After all of that, there was still Papa Neil to go, and it was a blessing that he was in Harvest Moon mode, nice to recharge the batteries to as the sun went down. After Neil's first encore, my cousin (who hadn't been in the crowd with me but had been sitting back up on the hill) insisted we leave to beat the traffic and I reluctantly agreed. And i should have known better. As we were walking down the forest lane out of the venue I could just barely hear Neil playing Rockin' in the Free World, and I sang along. I think it was about three years later that I found out that Pearl Jam were playing it with him. I've never forgiven my cousin for that, but I'm still so grateful to her for my being there... even if she'd have rather it was Bryan Fuckin' Adams up there!

So that was it. Pearl Jam's first time in Ireland. Thirteen years ago today. Still remember it so clearly.

Six weeks and counting till August 23rd....

I was there too - what a day. I fell down in the pit during Why Go and thought I was f**cked but my mate spotted me and somehow dragged me up by the head!

I still get a buzz when I think back to that day - awesome. I stuck around for RITFW by the way!! Any chance of a trade for a copy of that bootleg?
