I'd put them as the 3rd greatest band of all time, behind the beatles and led zep. PF are unbelievable. Still remember hearing them for the first time, first song i ever heard by them was Echoes, I couldnt believe it, sat jaw on floor the whole song. A mac screensaver danced as the song built and built.
Like the Beatles and Led Zep, what they accomplished, and their influence and importance is staggering to contemplate and consider. Imagine how many albums theyve sold, how many people have heard their music, how many bands have been influenced by them. There are some bands that are just so insanely influential and important you sort of just have to bow down in awe, this is one of those bands.
My favorite is Meddle.
Synching Echoes to 2001. and Dark Side to Wizard of Oz was quite fun.

I saw a PF tribute band a few years ago and they played Echoes. It was one of the best 23 minutes of my life.
I'm a fan of all their albums though, even "The Final Cut", though some people consider it more a Roger Waters solo album than a Pink Floyd album. "Not Now John" is one of my favorite PF tracks.
Saw David Gilmour & Rick Wright do Echoes in its entirety when Gilmour was touring for his On An Island album. I'll NEVER forget it...just...mindblowing!
Five years ago I would have agreed with this but I've done a complete 180 and now think Floyd is far superior to Zeppelin. But that's just me...

I've pondered this often and while Floyd isn't as one dimensional as alot of people seem to think, they don't cover the musical ground or have the influence that Zeppelin has.
Animals and Meddle are probably my most listened to albums, but don't think they've topped DSOTM or Wish You Were Here.
I think they could've easily shortened Dogs and Pigs but there's still some badass stuff in those sections. I love the pig noises that Gilmour is working with the talk box, and when he lets loose on the solo...MY GOD, what perfection. My argument against it is that it's 4 songs aren't nearly as powerful as the four songs on WYWH. I feel like it took me years to realize that Welcome to the Machine was completely without drums b/c the rest of the song is so perfect without them.
I hear what you mean, and of course in many ways its semantics, as both are among the greatest of all time. But for me, Led Zep is better because of how deep they were. You could make a case every single member of that band was the greatest ever at their role, Plant the greatest frontman, Page, the greatest guitarist ever, Bonzo the greatest drummer ever, John Paul the greatest bassist. I also feel like their mystique is far superior to that of Pink Floyds although they too had mystique. The wild lives they led, the crazy road stories, page dabbling in the occult, plant's odd and mystical lyrics. There indeed was a mystique and mysticism involved in that band. When I first heard them I didnt now about the groupie storys, or Page's interest in the occult, but I could feel something about the band. They seemed so odd, so steeped in literature and myth. First Zeppelin album i ever heard was Zoso. I had no idea about what they looked like, or how important they were, or that Plant was obsessed with the Lord of The Rings, I didnt even know what Hobbits were. But the image that entered my head as a 10 year old. was of odd characters. The man with sticks on his back on the front cover, the wizard looking guy standing on the mountain in the liner notes. The civil war looking guy in the liner notes, and the font of the lyrics. The tone of Plants voice in Stairway. They are created this image that haunts me to this day. And as I said, im many ways its like splitting hairs, but to me, the influence and importance of Led Zep is second only to the Beatles. Zeppelins influence and cultural importance i think is staggeringly huge, more huge than PF's.
but reguardless, PF were amazing. lately ive been obsessed with the solo in Time. That guitar is brutal
It's just for me personally, I've kinda gotten "over" Led Zeppelin. And I don't mean that disrespectfully. They're still one of my favorite bands and easily one of the greatest/most influential bands ever. But...I just don't listen to them much anymore. And I can't say it's because I've heard every song a million times because I've heard every Pink Floyd and Beatles song a million times too. They're just...not that interesting to me anymore. Maybe I just need something new from them. A new DVD or live album or whatever. The Beatles had their (fucking excellent) remasters boxset. Pink Floyd had their (sorta okay) immersion boxsets. Maybe I just need something from Zep to whip me back into shape.
It's so strange to say all that because my 18 year old self would freak the fuck out over someone thinking Pink Floyd is better than Led Zeppelin. And here's 18 year old me's argument: Zeppelin's complete catalog is better than Floyd's complete catalog. And while I still kinda think this, I think Floyd's high-points are much higher than Zeppelin's.
But again, that's just me.

My favorite part is that bass part just before the outro, around 9:37, whoever it is (I've always assumed it was Roger, but I guess it could have been somebody else) really lets that bass have it.
