Cheap Poster Framing Options?

Hello all! My wife and I are buying our first home, and I will finally have the man cave to display my 20 poster collection (17 PJ) and I was wondering if anyone has a lower priced solution for having a good frame without spending huge $$. Before the poster purists destroy me, we are having our first baby so I am under a tight budget, but she knows how long I've waited for Knoxville '98 and it's friends to grace our walls so any ideas would be awesome!! Thanks!!

Biggest is 20 x 28 (Bonnaroo) and only strange dimension is the blue '00 print (10.5 x 39). Thanks 81! I'll start hunting..

If you live in the Northeast, go to a Michaels (or similar arts/crafts store which does framing) and get poster frames when they are on sale... I purchased 10 frames for about $25 each and the picked out custom mats which they cut for me (about $15-25)... "custom" framing for under $50 a poster.

First of all...Avoid the "Big Box" framing stores like Michael's / Hobby Lobby / JoAnn's!!
These place offer HUGE discount coupons, but mark their prices WAY UP to make up for these supposed discounts & don't have a great reputation for quality work.
If you want to have your prints framed by a professional,
find a local independent framing store in your area.
Take the poster in with you and tell the framing professional what your budget is for each piece.
I've had really good luck with my local store and have been able to have several of my prints done professionally for not much money!!
    SDC11845.jpg
Simple Black frame with Non-reflective glass / NO MATTE - $56.00

    SDC11852.jpg
    SDC11853.jpg
Same frame & glass / Blue Serpentine Fillet instead of a Matte - $72.00

    SDC11239-1.jpg
    Same frame & glass / Single Matte - $108.00

The other option is to learn how to cut mattes & build your own frames...
I know several people on the boards that are quite good at framing their own posters!!
Finally...take your time and do the best job you can, framing your art.
I can tell these posters mean a lot to you,
so don't feel like you have to have them all framed and hung on the walls at once!!
    Hope this helps :ugeek:

Exactly what I did for a couple of posters and they came out great. Especially since alot of posters are weird sizes that are typically custom. Buy the bigger frame and and order a custom matting.

Think I have 7 or 8 posters framed and I've used the Ikea frame for all. I keep my simple, just a white background so the focus is on the poster. Bonnaroo is one I've framed.

I realise this isn't what the posters experts would do but its how I like my posters.

if you buy ANY poster framing items, make sure they are all 'acid free'. Otherwise the chemicals in the components (frame, paint, mat, backer etc) will eat away at the poster and discolor it.

Check out Walmart for some cheap ass frames. We are not talking about acid free boards or conservation glass or anything fancy but if you want something dirt cheap, they have it.

I heard Costco does it cheap too.

Thanks for the feedback! I've kicked around the uniform framing option for some (IKea) but I will check into some other local framers. Another thought- I've got a few i'm definitely more attached to ('98 Knoxville, EV Nashville Hatch Print w/Setlist, Signed PJ20 prints from all artists) to get matted and framed, but has anyone tried a poster display case you can flip through for the rest?

Nice, went to school at UT. I have one of the presentation cases, works great, but it's not on the wall. I use it mostly for posters that won't be framed or ones that are in the que to be framed. I will ask my framer if he knows a good framer in Knoxville next time I talk to him.

Totally agree. STAY AWAY FROM MICHAEL'S CUSTOM SHOP! I have gone to Michael's for two posters. The first was my SD PJ concert poster. First time I picked it up there was glitter inside, which must have gotten in there from the stripper that built it?? Or I guess another project in the room. They kept it another couple days, then the archive glass had scratches on it the next time I picked it up. This went on a couple times till it came out right.

The second poster I took there....well its still hard to talk about, even to this day...

    All I would say is...

    Don't go cheap.

Frame less posters in good frames - you'll only ending up spending money on reframing in the future. Don't get standard sized IKEA frames.

Do shop around though - usually the best prices will be found with your smaller local frame shops.

I had a Spider-Man movie poster from 2001, the one that was pulled from the movie theaters after 9/11 because it had the twin towers in Spider-Man's eyes. Well I sat on this thing or years waiting to get the man room it deserved. I take it to Michael's (I know that part is my fault) cause there are not a lot of options by me. I do up the whole archive options, glass, bindings etc. It took an extra couple weeks to finish, and when I went to pick it up it was in the frame backwards (it was a double-sided print). Evidently, the tech must have thought YAM was the month the movie was released. Ok, no harm no foul. Excuse, me, this is when it gets hard.. Until two weeks later when I get a call while I am out of town that "there was an accident." When they removed the poster from the frame to put it back in, the tore the edge. I, cool as ever (maybe not) went back to the store when I got back to find that not only did it tear in the middle, they did not used heavy duty tape or something. The tape removed colors and layers all around the border of the poster. My heart broke. They resized the frame and matting to cover the damages and didn't charge me, but my baby is ruined, and it hurts my soul every time I look at it.

:( oh wow, that's pretty bad. (i just looked up the poster and it's going for $129-250 on the auction site right now) That sucks they weren't the brightest framers, what they did was unacceptable.

I went there to get a price quote for a poster, and wasn't impressed with the framer or the price-even with their 60% off framing + additional 15% off. CJMST3K ('the framing guy' on here) has better prices than Michael's. He usually does sales/specials for all of us here.

Don't ever go to prints plus!!!! I took my Boston poster there a few years ago and it came out really good. Fast forward a few years and I wanted to take it out and to my surprise they fucking glued it to the back poster board. RUINED!!!!!!!
Having tasted, a life wasted, I'm never going back again!

I've done most of mine at hobby lobby. I buy the sectional frames an do it myself. Very easy. If I need to or want to I'll have them cut some mat for me and they cut glass for me. Almost always under $60.

They also have built frames of all types and sizes. If I like one that fits my poster I'll have them cut the glass for that and they'll usually finish it for me right then.

I've only used their custom framing a few times but never had a problem. I do agree that you should do them right or you're just going to want to redo them later.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.
