Half of India loses power

What I find most shocking about this story is that it's barely news. 600 million people without power because of crumbling power grids, and no one even cares. But when a couple states in the US lost their grids, it was like Armageddon the world over.

Also, India is so fucked if they don't get their shit together and start maintaining their infrastructures better.

It's barely news because it's not all that surprising.

Neither is the fact that Kirsten Stewart fucked around on her boyfriend, but that's making headlines.

Its probably why India lost power. Or maybe it was Tomkat's fault.

Is it though? I watch the "news" -- which is to say, the Today show or the equivalent -- every morning while I get ready for work...and most commutes I listen to NPR...and I literally only know about Twilight drama b/c my wife told me.

Likewise, is it really international news when parts of the US lose power? I had no idea. I'm sure it's reported at some level, but it seems like we're making it out to be more than it is here.

I agree we have a problem with fixating on the wrong type of news and information in the developed world, but let's at least be honest in how we attack it.

I am seeing the Kirsten Stewart news EVERYWHERE! And I didn't even know who she was until this story came about!
Yes, a massive blackout in the US is world news, speaking as someone who watches non-US news (i.e. CBC, BBC, Al Jazeera). Just about everything that is huge news within the US is news everywhere. No one gives a shit about India though, apparently. It's only 1.2 billion people. :?

Haha, okay, fair enough. Perhaps I'm just out of the e-news loop. Just curious, where are you seeing all the kirsten stewart gossip?

I guess I'm still questioning how you're characterizing "huge" news, but I'm not surprised it at least showed up in the non-US press. As someone else mentioned, it's more shocking when a large part of the more developed world goes down.

Also I'm not really sure who you're frustrated with. The foreign press? The US? Consumers who indirectly influence the news with their dollars? Advertisers who expect splashy headlines to increase readership? I doubt if many folks in the world are more worried, so to speak, when the US loses power than India. I guess it depends what you mean by "give a shit". Are you talking concern or just pure interest level?

I'm frustrated generally with the world. And for sure with the mainstream media (not just US), as well as its consumers. Everyone, really, haha. Everyone is always talking I'm just talking pure interest by "give a shit". It just bugs me that the western world doesn't seem to care about what people are going through elsewhere, or about profound problems happening in other parts of the world, as though these things don't affect us. They really do! More and more so. It's simply irritating that we live in a culture where keeping our heads in the sand about so many things going on in the world is the norm.

Not that I meant this as a profound post or anything. I'm just bored at work.

And I don't remember really where I've seen all the KS news; wasn't paying attention ... in a LOT of places though, and I'm not talking about TMZ.

What, that little line way down the page amongst all the other news bits??
It's not big news. I didn't say it wasn't anywhere in the news at all. How do you think I found out about it?? Just figured it would be a breaking story or something. It would be if half of the US had a black out.

Just have to make it known that I appreciate your input on typically serious threads...including that tidbit up there :P

And to PJ_Soul re this: "It just bugs me that the western world doesn't seem to care about what people are going through elsewhere, or about profound problems happening in other parts of the world"

Some do (and express it in many ways)! It may just be your perception ;)

I know some do (I do) ... but not most. Not enough for it to matter, really.
Anyway... I think this is all coming off too serious? I was just pointing something out. I wasn't frothing at the mouth about it, lol.

I hear what you're saying though, PJ Soul. I often feel like I live in a bubble here. I try to pay attention to international news, but even when I'm successful, I'm still like "is this shit really going on"? How can it be so fucking bad all the fucking time in some places? Then I start to wonder if I'm just being fed the biased stories that the MSM wants to feed me in order to impose an opinion on me about certain part of the world. Then I get frustrated, grab a beer and book, and shut it out.

To be fair, I can't even generalize the above to the US or the "West" as compared to everyone else. We're not perfect, bad stuff happens here too (hello, aurora), but it never happens to me or mine, so I end up feeling insulated even from domestic stuff.

They say this was caused by an aging power grid. Ours is even older. It's just a matter of time. This might be a good reminder to replenish stored water, check the dates on batteries and stock up a few more canned goods. I'm not going to stock up years and years worth of supplies. If things ever get that bad here I'll burn my credit card for fuel. But a few weeks worth of extra emergency supplies is wise.

Unrelated to this story, I just bought a hand-crank radio with flashlight and phone/accessory charger built in. Stoked!

I have a gallon of water in my storage room. :? And fresh water sources surround my home.
... a natural disaster (specifically, a massive earthquake) is more my concern... I should be okay; probably just needs a week's worth of canned goods and I'm set. It pays to be an avid camper; that gear is useful. :) ... No power grid issues in my neck of the woods luckily. But where there are issues with that, I thought they were taking care of it because of that black out in the East some years back (2008??). Wasn't that their wake up call? Didn't that kick start them into moving towards upgrades or something? I don't know what's going on with California ... I thought the issues there were more a political scam than crumbling infrastructure! ... I guess the message here is that this whole issue ought to be more in the forefront though! If the grids are still at risk of failing everyone should get updates on that regularly.

Yeah... Just to clarify, I didn't mean that the story was blacked out or anything. I was just surprised it wasn't top breaking news, like extensive coverage. That's all. I mean, I found the story on the BBC and posted it here. I know it was news. Just not big news like I would have expected. :)

I'm glad I'm not trying to drive in Eastern India today, that's for sure. Can you imagine? 600 million people losing power... hard to imagine really. I've read further though, and found that Indians use less power per capita than pretty much anyone else in the world (that use any). I also found out that Canada uses the most by far. Way more per capita than the US. Not sure what that's about... heating maybe??? Or do we gobble it just because we have so much hydro power? It is cheap as hell. My electric bill is around $25/month.

 How do you do it? That's impressive! I turn everything off I can including power to the TV (I call the the "electricity vampire" and basically only use it to watch videos), turn off the computer, rarely dry clothes in the dryer, turn off lights not in use, etc, etc. and yet I still average more than that. How do you keep it so low?

I don't do anything at all. It's just that electricity costs next to nothing here! We've got water coming out of our butts up here, and all we use is hydroelectricity.

My house has an air conditioner but I use it sparingly even though it's very hot for months on end here (mid to high 90's or low 100's Fahrenheit for most of summer is common). I get around AC much of the time because the house has a whole house fan. It works just like the one pictured here:
