What I find most shocking about this story is that it's barely news. 600 million people without power because of crumbling power grids, and no one even cares. But when a couple states in the US lost their grids, it was like Armageddon the world over.
Also, India is so fucked if they don't get their shit together and start maintaining their infrastructures better.

I chalk that up to our society going brain dead.
Its probably why India lost power. Or maybe it was Tomkat's fault.
Likewise, is it really international news when parts of the US lose power? I had no idea. I'm sure it's reported at some level, but it seems like we're making it out to be more than it is here.
I agree we have a problem with fixating on the wrong type of news and information in the developed world, but let's at least be honest in how we attack it.
Yes, a massive blackout in the US is world news, speaking as someone who watches non-US news (i.e. CBC, BBC, Al Jazeera). Just about everything that is huge news within the US is news everywhere. No one gives a shit about India though, apparently. It's only 1.2 billion people. :?
I guess I'm still questioning how you're characterizing "huge" news, but I'm not surprised it at least showed up in the non-US press. As someone else mentioned, it's more shocking when a large part of the more developed world goes down.
Also I'm not really sure who you're frustrated with. The foreign press? The US? Consumers who indirectly influence the news with their dollars? Advertisers who expect splashy headlines to increase readership? I doubt if many folks in the world are more worried, so to speak, when the US loses power than India. I guess it depends what you mean by "give a shit". Are you talking concern or just pure interest level?

Not that I meant this as a profound post or anything. I'm just bored at work.
And I don't remember really where I've seen all the KS news; wasn't paying attention ... in a LOT of places though, and I'm not talking about TMZ.
It's not big news. I didn't say it wasn't anywhere in the news at all. How do you think I found out about it?? Just figured it would be a breaking story or something. It would be if half of the US had a black out.
Nope, was top left corner, has been big picture in the front too, but that was earlier in the day, you know, when everyone else was talking about it.
cincy would never do that...

And to PJ_Soul re this: "It just bugs me that the western world doesn't seem to care about what people are going through elsewhere, or about profound problems happening in other parts of the world"
Some do (and express it in many ways)! It may just be your perception
Anyway... I think this is all coming off too serious? I was just pointing something out. I wasn't frothing at the mouth about it, lol.
To be fair, I can't even generalize the above to the US or the "West" as compared to everyone else. We're not perfect, bad stuff happens here too (hello, aurora), but it never happens to me or mine, so I end up feeling insulated even from domestic stuff.

Saving up for this:

... a natural disaster (specifically, a massive earthquake) is more my concern... I should be okay; probably just needs a week's worth of canned goods and I'm set. It pays to be an avid camper; that gear is useful. ... No power grid issues in my neck of the woods luckily. But where there are issues with that, I thought they were taking care of it because of that black out in the East some years back (2008??). Wasn't that their wake up call? Didn't that kick start them into moving towards upgrades or something? I don't know what's going on with California ... I thought the issues there were more a political scam than crumbling infrastructure! ... I guess the message here is that this whole issue ought to be more in the forefront though! If the grids are still at risk of failing everyone should get updates on that regularly.
I'm glad I'm not trying to drive in Eastern India today, that's for sure. Can you imagine? 600 million people losing power... hard to imagine really. I've read further though, and found that Indians use less power per capita than pretty much anyone else in the world (that use any). I also found out that Canada uses the most by far. Way more per capita than the US. Not sure what that's about... heating maybe??? Or do we gobble it just because we have so much hydro power? It is cheap as hell. My electric bill is around $25/month.
 How do you do it? That's impressive! I turn everything off I can including power to the TV (I call the the "electricity vampire" and basically only use it to watch videos), turn off the computer, rarely dry clothes in the dryer, turn off lights not in use, etc, etc. and yet I still average more than that. How do you keep it so low?

How often do you use an air conditioner?
who has an air conditioner???? isnt that why god invented windows that open??? :P

Thank Christ for the gift of windows that open...
When it gets humid enough, you're screwed.
i find minimal movement helps when humidity kicks in.

My house has an air conditioner but I use it sparingly even though it's very hot for months on end here (mid to high 90's or low 100's Fahrenheit for most of summer is common). I get around AC much of the time because the house has a whole house fan. It works just like the one pictured here:
