"DEEP"~ in search of HER...

....on the first pages of the new DEEP, there is a STORY about Katie Santa Maria and her "Make a Wish" wish ~concert with Pearl Jam.
Does anyone know her or know how I can find her? Her short description of her heart defect sounds very very similar to the same defect my son has, enduring 3 open heart surgeries to correct the defect (fatal if not corrected) HYPOPLASTIC LEFT HEART SYNDROME.
Please, if anyone knows her or her family or how I might be able to reach them, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Tiff try sending an email to the 10C explain your story and see if maybe they can get them your info so that they can contact you in case they can't give you the info they have.

    i believe Katie's uncle posted about her experience with the band shortly after the Hartford show. i'd suggest either searching the "Porch" forum or the "Given To Fly" live forum for his post. it might take a little bit of time but it could help you in your efforts. i suspect the 10C would not release any personal information about Katie, so you might be on your own for the search, but at least you have a good place to start here. good luck,...

    That was an awesome moment w/ Ed and Katie, Ed's smile was priceless, and Katie looked so happy!!!!!!!

    I had a feeling that is why she was on stage, very memorable

    Good news about Katies mother contacting you! I loved reading Katies story in Deep it actually made me cry.

    Very nice/moving story that about Katie on the first page.

    That was me who posted shortly after the show. She is the niece of one of my good friends. I was stoked to see her and her story in Deep. I cannot wait to give it to my friend to have. It was / is a great story. Matt gave her 10 pair of sticks and her mom made irish soda bread that they all enjoyed and if I remember correctly Ed said that was the first time they ever had something like that made for them.

    In any case, glad the original poster was able to get in touch.

    Well, Katies mom emailed me last saturday and I responded the same day. I haven't heard back from her. I hope she got my email..........Thanks for posting :)

    awesome story - i cried when i read it. it's amazing what some kids have to endure. great to see Ed and the band respond so well and with so much love for her. very moving.

    That letter in Deep moved my heart incredibly. Wanted all my friends to read it so that they have a little bit of idea how this bands music touches peoples inside.

    I finally read the article yesterday, and I immediately thought of your son! I also remember that February 14th is happy healthy heart day, eh? Going on 34 years surgery free . . .

    The article inspired me to kick my running up a notch. If I ever meet someone like her I want to be able to say, "Eh, look, no problem!" Brian Roberts inspires me in that way. 3 cheers for BRob!

    Why would people pick on her? That's just not right. I know that another person in my 3rd grade class had open heart surgery, and we had bumps near the top of our chests. It goes away, but her bump was a little more pronouced. Hmmmm, that's just not right.

    Anyway, my disease was Tetralogy of Fallot if anyone else out there has that *high five* :)

    Maybe you all would like to start one for parents of kids who went through or are going through open heart surgery. Here's one Parents and kids with congenital diseases. There's two members, but we know there are more of you out there.

    In regards to people picking on others: :(

    I often wondered that question myself. I have never had open heart surgery but I do have a few medical problems. I was born premature, and have Hydrocephalus (hope I spelled that right) and a minor case of cp which has caused me to walk with a limp. I found Katies story very moving and I know where she is coming from on people picking on her, because people did it to me. I do have a few close friends and I have college to thank for that.
    Pearl jam's music is what I relayed on most, Ed's lyrics just spoke to me. I think that is why Present Tense is my favorite song.
    I really don't know why people pick on others.. I wish people would teach their children that no two people are the same and regardless of our differences we all have amazing qualities. The "Leash" Part of Katie's story, I can relate to that. "I wanted all the haters to get out of my Fing face"
    Pearl jam is such a great band and Katies story is just one more proof of that.
    I always hope that one day I can thank the band either in a letter or in person for their amazing work- it's helped me out alot like most of us here.

    I thought Kenshunt on here had hydrocephalus. I still remember our *mom* stories. How we remember what our mom's were doing when we first woke up from major surgery. Pretty cool to *talk* with someone about that.
