After 9 years, I'm finally doing it...

I've played music by ear---Trumpet, Guitar, drums, bass....

Well I started playing with the church's praise band. A close friend/mentor is also playing with them (John Chamberlin of "Sweet Maya"). He offered to teach me music theory. I know the basics (keeping time, how many beats notes get, but I don't know actual chords or notes...or anything else). I'm going to finally learn music theory. I'm hoping this will help with solos and jam sessions. Any thoughts?

Learning anything is better than not, and learning music theory is an awesome step to becoming better!

I just kinda started myself, and It's really starting to make sense.

Have fun! I learned a fair amount years ago but I rarely use it now.
  • I majored in musicology, so I had to learn some music theory over the years. But I feel I also rarely actively use all that now. It certainly makes things easier when communicating with other musicians though.
