Anyone Live In NY State (Not NYC)?

We're flying into Rochester, NY this weekend and then heading upstate for a wedding reception. We're doing Cooperstown on Sunday, and then Niagara Falls on Monday, before heading home at night (just a short weekend).

Any advice on any of those things? We're tentatively trying to take our drive from Rochester to Carthage the scenic route and see Lake Ontario on the way. Any advice?

What about Niagara Falls? I've heard about going to the Canadian side (we'll bring out passports)...is it that much better than the US side?

Any NY state advice is most appreciated. Thanks!

Why Carthage if I may ask? BTW I grew up in the Utica area and now live in Smalbany. You are all over my stomping grounds. Post exactly what you have planned and I can give you pointers of some shit to see.

Don't they have some sort of hall in Cooperstown where they recognize certain sports players who have attained a certain level of fame? May be worth checking out!

If you are going to the Falls definitely go to the Canadian side.

My opinion was "This is way better than the US side" for about 5 minutes...

then I was like " yep, there it is..."

I don't mean to be a debbie downer. Definitely go see it and enjoy it, but that was my experience.
I was also like 13? that probably had something to do with it as well..

Carthage is where the wedding reception is (friend's in-law's house).

Rochester to Carthage tomorrow. Stop in Oswego to see Lake Ontario?
    Carthage to Cooperstown Sunday.
Carthage to Niagara Falls on Monday, fly home from Rochester on Monday night.

Any ideas? We just got back from Europe, so we couldn't take much time off other than the 3 days.

I live very close to the falls.

Canadian side is definitely better. Better view, casinos, restaurants, shopping (all cdns shop this side due to taxes). American side you walk around on the islands leading to the falls, that is cool.

The best falls related thing imo is the whirlpool jet boat tours in the gorge. It is about 1 mile up from the falls in the lower niagara river. A jet boat takes you through rapids, devils hole whirlpool, etc.

Maid of the mist is cool, as is cave of the winds. There is decent hiking around there, but it doesn't sound like there is time.

As far as eats, go to duffs if you want wings. Mighty taco is a local fast foodsy taco joint that everyone from the area adores too (one in rochester as well)

Yes. Oswego is a nice place to take in Lake Ontario. I will tell you that Carthage to Cooperstown is a hike and there's not a lot of "highways" between them. If you plan on driving to Cooperstown and back to Carthage in one day and actually spend some time in Cooperstown you better leave early. Very early. A lot of stuff closes early in that twon...especially on a Sunday. This is the route I would take myself.

It will take about 4 hours. You could swing west of Carthage and hit 81 south to 90 east...more miles....equal if not more time. Take my route, trust me.

If you're a beer lover, go to the Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown. At a minimum, swing by to pick up some beer even if you don't get to check it out but I think they do tours of their brewery too.

    http://www.ommegang.com/#!our_brewery

Like someone else mentioned, there's the Baseball Hall of Fame is also in Cooperstown.

It's a nice little town to spend half an afternoon wandering in and out of stores if the weather's nice but if you don't have much time and don't love beer or baseball, probably no reason to spend too much time.

I've only been twice, so if someone else has better advice feel free to jump in :)

They do tours and you get to sample all of their beers at the end! 8-)

I can't remember which route we took, but we took backroads and it was something like Lowville, Utica...shit I can't remember the rest. It took us about 2 hours and 15 minutes. We got there very early and it was great. The only bad part was that we were there very early and were taking our time with the exhibits, and by about 10am, the crowds started showing up. A lot of people seem to breeze through the exhibits, which surprised me because if (1) you're enough of a baseball fan that you'd make the hike to Cooperstown to see the HOF and (2) you're paying $19.50/person when there, you may as well soak it up. Anyway, the Hank Aaron exhibit was great and the Barry Bonds "asterisk" ball around the corner was even better.

It's VERY "touristy" on the Canadian side. On the American side it's just for the most part a shit hole.

    Hahaha...

I was wearing a PJ shirt at the Hall of Fame and one of the cashiers in the store looked like he was 13 years old (braces, high voice etc) and he saw my shirt and said "nice shirt." I said, "oh thanks, you like Pearl Jam?" And he said, "uh, yeah!" Haha...something tells me he was just being nice and only liked the shirt art.
