I'm going to Portland next month for work and this will be my first trip to the city. Can any of you Portlanders and others who have visited Portland give me a few pointers on a few can't miss things to do and see while I'm there? I'll be staying at the Hotel Fifty along the riverfront.

JMo lives there and can probably help you out on some things.

During the weekend there is a huge farmer's market with all sorts of cool stuff. Right on the riverfront.

In Old Portland, there is a cool bar called 'Branch Whiskey Bar' and they have excellent 'bar food'. When I was there, I had Lobster Corndogs and Duck Fat fries. http://branchwhiskeybar.com/index.html
The Whiskey Menu is bigger than their food menu.

I would also go to the Japanese Gardens (if you're into that stuff) really amazing. http://japanesegarden.com/
Go early when they first open up, (when there aren't screaming kids running around) it is one of the most tranquil places I have ever been to.

Powell's Books is the largest independent bookstore in the world. It is really overwhelming, and I could spend days in there.

Don't drink Starbucks...go to Stumptown and have coffee there...that coffee is AMAZING.

    this should help too: http://www.travelportland.com/
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

Go to Acropolis order a craft beer and a steak and watch the girls strip! ;)

If you collect music go to Music Millenium on 32nd and Burnside or downtown to 2nd Ave Records...

I'll put all of this on my list.

I might even drive up to Aberdeen and sleep under Kurt Cobain's bridge. 8-)

I've never been to Portland or Oregon for that matter but there's a very cool restaurant on Main St. you should check out.

What's this, a gun-toting Alabamian in Portland? Seamless fit. You'll have to tell people you're a tourist. ;)

Actually when are you getting into town? There are some great shows in Portland over the next couple months.
Im going to Jack White on the 15th. Alejandro Escovedo is playing a tiny club called the Doug Fir. Im hoping to make that show. And on the 9th Sigur Ros is in town. I dont think I can make that show. Just because some band decided to play Montana on September 30th. And I wont have enough time off for both shows. So if I dont go I have tix I will sell at face value for the Sigur Ros concert...
