I'm not saying every conservative or liberal listens to their "party leaders" hook, line, and sinker. in fact, what i thought was most important about the chapter i'm referencing is that they outline how their are four very different factions of conservatism in the US. each has some in common, but there is also very different feelings within the right. what's interesting is that their are some who are staunch in their feelings like you as a libertarian/neoliberal and don't necessarily associate with others who would identify as conservative. at the same time, as a popular movement, conservatives, as a whole, have been far better at making a move in popular culture to get their accumulated beliefs advanced - better at AM radio, Fox News, announcing the Olympics, through sporting events, movies, and tv shows in normalizing various factions of conservative beliefs.

I see. That is definitely true. The best word they could have ever co-opted was conservative. If they stayed with the term Republican, that is very narrow. But the idea that the republicans are candidates of conservatives was necessary in grouping those that would probably not agree on much. I think that has happened with Liberals as well. It is funny that conservative entertainment is so much more popular than the counter part which, from the start at least on radio with Air America, was full of entertainers.
For sure on Liberals we have youngsters with you on Ron Paul's game, and then a bunch of people who hate each other for not being liberal enough. Conservative radio is way more popular because they have all the cool talking points. You don't like war - unamerican. You believe in taxing the rich - class warfare. You support gay marriage - family values motherfucker. You believe in women being able to have an abortion - family values duh. You don't want women and minorites to be exploited anymore - ummm we fixed that shit in the 60s stop bitching. You think the constitution is a document worth updating - not a fan of our founding fathers. You think Marx had some very salient points - communist everyone there's a communist in the room Not every conservative believes in these things for sure, but it definitely has more entertainment value than picking apart the structural issues plaguing our country which only plays with people who have time and money to spend thinking about them. Plus they liberals tend to chortle at those they perceive to be wrong on facebook, and forums but they enjoy the privileges of capitalism without actually changing those things that allowed them to get where they got. You might actually like my newest article that is coming out soon partially about how liberal profs specifically talk about shit all the time but don't do anything but go home to their nice homes and write about the evils of capitalism.

I will definitely be interested in reading it.

My personal favorite, what?! you are against state sponsored welfare in its current form? that means you want old people and the autistic to fend for themselves and you are against the poor.

ultimately, people no longer listen. it doesn't matter what kind of conservative or liberal you are...we no longer listen to each other because we are too busy telling the other one what they are for and what they are against...

If I only said I am conservative(which isn't a great definition of my political views because of how the word has changed meaning) there would be many assumptions made about me and my personality. Same thing if I say i am liberal.

    sad really.

Oh and those on the left aren't the only ones who do nothing. that is a common theme among those that consider themselves political animals. Most people who complain about the way things are do nothing to change them...whether they are successful or not, the effort needs to be there. People bitch about the 2 party system and then support a party rather than a candidate...people bitch about slimy politicians and then incumbents win most races...

It is a common trend in the US and probably elsewhere in the world. Smart people who can make a difference simply speak their ideas into a vacuum. Sad really, there are so many great people that would get into public service if it wasn't a gotcha game full of 20 year old secrets where being a bully 40 years ago is more important than policy in the last 3 years being examined.

add all of this rambling to a pocket full of quarters and it will still only get you a cup of coffee.
