What if we could be genetically engineered?

Hypothetically, let's say you decide to have a child, and science gave you an option to make that child smart, nonviolent,

Genetically they would look like you and display your best traits, but any defects would be weeded out.

We'd live in a world where no one would have the urge to walk into a theater an kill people. People would be selfless and only act to make the world better for everyone.

People would decide to limit their children to prevent overpopulation. Not cheat, not kill, not rape, etc..

Basically if we could engineer everyone to get along and do what is best for the survival of the human race.

  • can you imagine a world where nobody had any thing that made them unique?

Nobody had anything that the masses didn't feel comfortable with?

Steven Hawking would be out... what parent wants a child who'll grow up to have ALS?

    No Michelangelo... no fags.

Cher? Nope. Let's weed out the dyslexics.

and of course, we'd want non-violent and obedient people... a bunch of slaves who do what they're told.

I hope I die long before that happens.

I don't like this idea at all. I could see a subservient class with inferior genes being engineered to work for a new ruling class. Genetic imperfections could be used to control the masses and bring about a new form of oppression. The rich would be smarter, healthier stronger and longer lived than the rest of us.

I'm certainly glad that I won't be part of such a world.

We would all look like Jude Law and Uma Thurman. Those of us not altered would look like Ethan Hawke.

    I'd be totally against it.

I think we as a species are very naive about this topic. Technology and modern mecidine already intervene well beyond and extend the lives of humans, so how is that different? I know there is obviously some grey area with limitations, but the common cold used to kill people a thousand yrs ago, and improvements have been made to adjust this bad thing from occuring. How are vaccinations or any other medical innovation different? It is simply put, humans intervening and controlling their own life.

I got the impression that OP was attempting to set up an "ideal hypothetical", though I could be mistaken. So using your examples:

    - We'd have Hawking, but he'd be able to think AND walk.

    - Michelangelo would be able to paint, invent, etc, but not be gay...hey wait I think I've been set up here. I'm kidding. I think the fear you're getting to here is "who gets to determine what genes/traits are good or bad?" I think for the purposes of the OP, we assume that "bad" is only what is very obviously "bad" as outlined in the OP, a la murder, rape, theft etc.

    - We'd have Cher (okay again I think I'm being set up here :P ), but she'd be able to sing AND read/write without effort.

But... does being gay make one more creative? Does being gay make one more artistic?

Ok but MANY very powerful people in the GOP say that being gay is like being an alcoholic or a kleptomaniac or a rapist... so... yeah... who gets to decide?
    - We'd have Cher (okay again I think I'm being set up here :P ), but she'd be able to sing AND read/write without effort.

But if she could write... would she have become a singer and actress? She says she chose to sing in bars because she couldn't type or work jobs that required reading and data...

That's actually not true. The Common Cold is just your body over-reacting to an otherwise harmless virus. Nobody has ever died of a cold.

Although I know what you mean... medical advancements help people live longer... I just worry that they will be used to keep some from ever being born.

Not that it matters, but I just backspaced over a semi-diatribe...sometimes I get fired up and (the proper) words escape me. I'll leave it to when I can better articulate.

As to Cher, I'm not a fan overall but loved her - along with Sonny and Chaz - as a kid (she was a V-A-M-P, vamp!) And in Moonstruck.

I also have an iron candleholder in our bathroom and a huge gorgeous papier-mache sun hanging on our living room wall, courtesy of her now-defunct catalog, "Sanctuary".

if JUST that part of genetics that could give a person the propensity to comit non-defensive acts of lethal violence actually COULD be tweaked out, given that everything else remains unaffected, I would think the removal of that part would be in the best interest of mankind.

Other defects shouldn't be messed with.

I don't see a problem with the below honestly. We have medical advancements to avoid babies being born with awful diseases or fatal issues.. this is part of the reason we do testing during pregnancy as well as in some cases have abortion options. Our species has become so self-centered, we lose sight of the natural cycle of life, so we delude ourselves into thinking we shouldn't meddle when the reality is we already to in dramatic ways which not only have repurcussions for humans but the environment and world around us (other species included).

The problem with the whole idea of this is that it promotes eugenics, which is wrong on all levels...

And some of the genetic tampering that we have done in food and other areas is still relatively new. How do we know that we wouldn't screw that up somehow and create far worse problems than already exist.

Personally, I like defective people as well - makes life more interesting :)
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

    So true, JonnyPistachio!

The sad thing about mental illness is that it still often caries a stigma. If the kidneys fail we are given care and sympathy. If the mind fails, we are locked up in places that are often as bad as prisons. I've known people who have been there.

Most of us have or will have imperfections- myself included. It's not that I don't want to be the perfect me that I once was ( ... ) but if we engineer all the imperfections out of ourselves we become machines, not people. In fact, it's often our imperfections that bring us closer and give us reasons to care for each other.
