I am sick of asking why must innocent lives be taken...

So sorry for this young man's family...

POLICE have arrested an 18-year-old man over the death of Thomas Kelly in Kings Cross.

Police say the man was arrested at a sports field in Belmore in southwestern Sydney at around 7.30pm (AEST).

The 18-year-old has been taken to Campsie Police Station where he is being questioned by detectives.

The teenager was arrested by Homicide Squad detectives at a sports field at Belmore about 7.30pm tonight.

The young man is believed to be from Glendenning, near Mount Druitt in Sydney’s west.

It is understood the alleged attacker had just turned 18 this year.

He is currently at Campsie Police Station being interviewed by detectives from Strike Force Mohawk, which was formed to investigate the death of Thomas Kelly, and is expected to be charged.

He will appear before court tomorrow.

The Daily Telegraph has been made aware of the man's identity but cannot print it for legal reasons.

Kelly was "king hit" in the face by a stranger as he walked in Kings Cross with his girlfriend on July 7 on the way to a mate's birthday party.

Police described it as a "sickening and unprovoked attack".

The 18-year-old trainee accountant collapsed to the ground and hit his head.

The attacker fled and the teenager was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with severe head injuries.

He died the following Monday after his life support was switched off.

A day later, on July 10, his distraught family made an emotional appeal for anyone with information to contact police.

"We can't even remember what day it is, we haven't changed our clothes since we came up from Bowral ... it is like being in a hole," his father Ralph Kelly said.

"We know it's going to be a massive, massive hole for us."

Mr Kelly said his son had only just met a girl after having a difficult time in school and that his life was "finally taking off".

In an interview with 60 Minutes, he said he hoped justice would come to Thomas' attacker soon.
