Healthier to live near a coast?

A new study from the European Centre for Environment & Human Health, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Exeter, has revealed that people living near the coast tend to have better health than those living inland.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 191439.htm

Previous research has shown that the coastal environment may not only offer better opportunities for its inhabitants to be active, but also provide significant benefits in terms of stress reduction. Another recent study conducted by the Centre in collaboration with Natural England found that visits to the coast left people feeling calmer, more relaxed and more revitalised than visits to city parks or countryside. One reason those living in coastal communities may attain better physical health could be due to the stress relief offered by spending time near to the sea.

Hmm i find water very calming, my favorite part of the day is the two ferry rides i take. i would love to own a boat but i understand it like throwing money away, both my bosses own one, non stop maintenance.

I always thought living on the west coast was healthy- and at time I've lived withing a few miles of the Pacific Ocean (San Francisco and The Olympic Peninsula). Since Fukushima happened, I'm not so sure that's true anymore.

had a paddle and saw some starfish in kelp beds and a seal this morning before work. I am healthier because of it.

There is nothing more soothing than sitting on that boardwalk bench right next to the ocean at night when most people have gone home and hearing the waves break upon the shore. The quieted coos of the birds, the creaks of the piers and breakwaters. Nothing. (unless of course, you are listening to Eddie crooning in your ears while doing so...bliss!)

Believe me, the Jersey Shore is NOT what it is on TV people, at least not unless you are in Seaside or Wildwood.

It might be interesting to see an economic comparison tossed in with this study. For instance, I believe that in developed countries it is probably more expensive to live along a coastline and wealthier people tend to be healthier.

Interesting points. I'd assume coastal living is a bit more. There are a few pocket towns down here in south florida that were surprisingly affordable near the ocean for awhile. I know i've benefited from being near the warm waters of the Atlantic. I would go crazy being landlocked.

I love, love, love living on the coast...there's something indescribable about it...I lived in upstate NY and Southwestern PA prior to moving to the coast...it's just so relaxing living here...recently I purchased a '89 Full Size Bronco that I can drive out on the beach...

There's nothing like riding to the ocean 16 miles on my bicycle to see the sunrise in the early morning. It looks like the sun is on fire in the Atlantic Ocean in Palm Beach.

There's nothing like riding to the sound 16 miles to see the sunset in the early night. It looks like the sun is on fire in the Pacific Ocean in Puget Sound.

so much rain and gray skies it is depressing month after month after long ass month after horrendous month, on & on it goes.

healthier to live near a coast? near being the key word.

i lived on the fucking thing and it was pretty badass in a cool ass way but healthier? it was torture at times.
there were times i did not see sunshine for well over 90 days at a time. it fucking rained for 9 months straight.

I have several family members that live near West Palm Beach - I'm soooo tempted to eventually move somewhere near that area and just start a new beginning....

That wasn't the case the first time a came down here 20 years ago. It was summer and my aunt died and came down from up north for funeral and stepped off the plane. Man, I thought I was in the Sahara Desert I thought I was was on fire. my first words were...Oh hell no there's no way in hell I could EVER live here, this is just too DAMN hot".

Well that changed after living here in WPB....Lake Worth/Wellington for 6 months from Dec to May for 4 years not experincing the summers. Then later I finally did and it was not as bad as my very first experince. I actually liked the summers after moving here in our equestrian community. I'm grateful and happy that we live on the coast.

Yes, sometimes it may take a few "summers" to get into the swing of things, but I have to agree - everyone that I know who lives in Florida near a coast tell me all the time " they will never move back north"

    I may be next !!!! :D

Yes the summer I finally moved here for good was great especially after we drove from here to our other house in Phoenix AZ for 3 weeks. We worked on that house for 14 hours a day fixing and throwing out crap. i woked outside in the mid heat which reached at times 119 degrees. I must say though that heat is a different than S Florida....the heat/humidity can be far worse. It's dry heat in AZ and besides at the end of cleanup days i jumped in our pool with the biggest smile....I earned this dip.

I lived in Jamaica and we lived on the north coast near Ocho Rios and the south coast near Kingston and I have to say living near the coast walking distance was ALWAYS better.

I love living by water again. The years I lived in the middle of the country were hard for me. I really FELT the lack of a large body of water. Rivers and lakes just aren't the same!

I feel comforted by the bay, the bridges, and the coastal beaches. It feels like home to me because I grew up in the San Francisco bay area.

While I know it's a different bay (in so many ways!), when I'm crossing the water, I feel good and at home. :)

Love my morning run with the three unlost dogs. Start out by the inner harbor by my house, run past the salt marsh, sometimes out to the ocean beach, back along the harbor, home again.

It's all quite idyllic-sounding except for the diesel bus exhaust fumes, the deafening jet engines from the adjacent airport, and the squirrels who wait en masse to torment the littlest, and most easily offended, unlost dog.

Oh, this humidity in fLA is insane sometimes. The temperature has been consistent around here lately I think, but the other day I woke up and all my windows were fogged. I walked outside and it was like a wet hot blanket hit me. It was only one day though that it was that bad.

This past weekend I mowed my grass in the brief moment of sun we had, and I almost sweated to death. BUT, I went directly to the beach and jumped in to cool off. What a great feeling. I felt immediately invigorated and re-energized.

Ha Ha Ha  I KNOW exactly what you are talking about. Today, I just finished mowing the lawn 3.5 acres and i do it like it's a workout. I was soaking wet after I gather 2 hours or more...I did drive our commercial mower into the canal. I pulled it out finished up then took a long look at the lake. I had some swim trunks under my fatigues, yanked everything off then got a running start then dove in quickly swam to the canal side. Why because we have several 4-5ft alligators who frequent our shores looking for food or a bite into our dog Snoopy. First time I ever did that but it felt as good as the dive into that pool in AZ.
