My collection isn't massive (I think because I like having the actual CD and don't have enough money to buy them :P ), but anything that's added to it gets to stay.

Even if I don't listen to all of it a lot (hello, Hanson!) I still like to have it for those moments when I want to reminisce or just feel like listening to something again for the fun of it. I suppose if there's been a time in my life when I've really loved a particular song or album, that love never completely goes away.

Are you just chucking it, or finding new homes?

I actually went through all my CDs the other day since we are moving in a couple weeks and trying to throw away all unnecessary shit. A lot of 1-hit wonders in there....music biz is so different now. Back in the 90s if you loved 1 song, you bought the whole album. There were quite a few embarrassing rap/hip-hop CDs and surprisingly a lot of different soundtracks. I feel like soundtracks used to be a big deal...not so much anymore.

I don't find I listen to Jane's or Tool anymore, so why keep them?

and no, I'm not chucking them. I'll trade them at my local cd shop. and whatever he won't take I'll give away.

Yes!! I had this conversation recently about the soundtracks...they were so much better in the '90's...I have a whole buttload of soundtracks from that era!

That's a lot of summer cleaning! I don't purge anymore. Instead, I've changed my purchasing patterns. If it's an unknown or experimental purchase then, typically, I'll download it. If it's a more sure-fire thing and I want a physical copy I'll get a CD. If it's a barn burner then I'll p/u a vinyl copy. I suppose the only purging I'll do, at some point, is to clean out some vinyl that I don't listen to very often. Additionally, my musical taste goes in cycles. Most of the time it's dialed into rock 'n roll and indie but occasional singer-songwriter, jazz, blues and hip-hop binges surface. Because of that, I'm reluctant to part with those vinyl that may tap into a given mood/mindstate.

I used to purge by selling on,giving away, take to charity shops. But I always found later I would deeply regret it and go out and re-buy.
Now if it comes into my collection it stays.

that's what I do now too. you'll notice that none of these are new releases. I finally figured out I don't need to buy everything that I like, just ones I know will have lasting potential.

    RHCP????

I know you didn't ask but to me they are like my second favorite band.

I see stuff in my collection all the time but refuse to get rid of everything. I bought it or traded for it at one point for a reason and I stand by it. Somewhere down the line it might make for an interesting story. Who knows?

My apologies, just having some fun with it. To answer correctly, no.

I don't purge my music. It might be overwhelming, but I like building a collection, and I only bring things into my collection that I like. While my music taste has expanded and grown, I still enjoy the beginnings of my taste. I have yet to look at my collection and say "yeah, I don't like that anymore and am okay with never having it on hand to listen to." All the music I have means something to me, and a lot of it has memories and times in my life attached to it. I guess it's a little sentimental.

I just find I don't enjoy their music anymore. I'm not getting rid of everything. By far not. Maybe about 1/7 of my cd's.

rip it into your itunes folder and sell/trade/give away the physical copy. its so easy to keep a digital library of your music nowadays without taking up much physical space and collecting dust.
I agree w/ dcfaithful... ok, ok...keep the janes, audioslave and REM :P. Just because you dont listen to it regularly doesnt mean you wont still enjoy it from time to time, or maybe just feel like being nostalgic every once in a while. A lot of times I wont care too much for an album when it comes out, or maybe just dont give it enough time to sink in, but for some reason give it another try a few years later and find I feel differently about it. Or sometimes when a band puts out a new album, it makes me want to go back thru and listen to some of the older ones.
