After putting out one of my favorite albums of last year, Nostalgia Ultra, he returns with his debut album. At one point Last FM was shut down from people listening to this all at once.
Next level R and B stuff. Ambitious and wild album. Including a 10 minute song, and a Andre 3000 verse.
I think this is going to be on alot of top albums of 2012 lists.
Frank has put out two of the 4 best albums to come out of the OFWGKTA collective

people are flipping out over the pitchfork score, but again, i think this will be on everyones top 10 list in december. This album is ambitious as hell. You arent seeing many artists of any genre put out work like this album. I agree, the weeknd and frank are making r and b extremely exciting. The 3 weeknd albums and franks album last year, were some of the most compelling music created all year. And this board really has no love for it. I think there was one thread the entire year on The Weeknd, with maybe 2 or 3 posts at most, and i was the person who started the thread. As I said in a previous thread, R and B right now is extremely exciting in large part because of Frank and the weeknd. They way we all remember the early 2000's in terms of quality interesting mainstream pop and hip hop production ala Timbaland and the Neptunes, I think we will remember 2011 onwards as the time of interesting and innovative r and b.
I like the old school r and b vibe on this album.
I started a thread last year that was called something like "Pick 3 artists you recommend" and one of them was The Weeknd .
This board is not very musically diverse which makes me :(

agree completely. this board does a pretty good job of providing a general overview of bands who would be in the wheelhouse of PJ fans. But thats about it, in terms of music coverage and genres on this board. If it doesnt sound like it could play on an alternative rock radio station, this board typically isnt going to cover it. And that extends beyond R and B and hip hop. The many genres of rock as well. How many thrash or metal threads are there? Or threads on witch house, or shoegaze or ambient electronic? I love all the bands discussed on this board, but it often seems like if the band didnt get praised by PJ ala the strokes, neil, bruce or didnt tour with Pj ala sleater kinney, kings of leon, glen hansard, sonic youth, this board wont be talking about you. And of course, those are killer bands, but still... just sayin....
John Mayer.
Awesome album...... just a great follow-up to Nostalgia, Ultra..... one of the best albums from last year. Agree that the majority of people on this board probably don't listen to Frank or The Weeknd..... both are great.
Lets not forget the best opening band for Pearl Jam ever- My Morning Jacket! I wonder if so many people here would love them if they never opened for PJ???
Back to Channel Orange, I really can't stand the font of "Channel" on the cover- thats my one major gripe about this album .

I'm a huge Weeknd fan. Saw him in Boston this year - great show. His band was pretty tight too.
I'll have to check this out.
I agree about the lack of musical diversity here.
Ive learned to keep my appreciation for EDM to a minimum... because its considered trash around here. No talent ass clown button pushers
musicismylife & SVRDhand - u guys have great taste in music!
I always find myself agreeing with your choices.
The feeling is mutual
I would say that The Weeknd is darker and has less cathy tunes, but they have a somewhat similiar style.

thanks for the kind words, twisted, haha. Im jealous you saw the weeknd live. i caught the coachella webcast when he was performing and he sounded great.
but i would agree frank ocean sounds nothing like or very little like the weeknd. I feel like the weeknd has different influences. someone else suggested he, the weeknd, is more influenced by michael jackson and darker music, i feel like the weeknd is great at portraying a certain lifestyle on record, and of course he is associated with drake, and to a degree i think you can hear that influence in the 3 mixtapes. while i think frank oceans music is alot sunnier or happier to a degree. i feel like d'angelo and stevie wonder were big influences for frank on this new record, and just in general as well. he's an interesting guy because of the fact he was writing for beiber before all this, and is probably the most tame member of Odd Future.
i feel like frank is more influenced by traditional classic r and b in the true sense of the word, while the weeknd, is darker and his production is more spacey, and avantegarde and of the moment sounding. both are great though
I think they both, the weeknd and frank got lumped in together last year, because both were considered to be changing the landscape of r and b, and I would agree with that assessment. I'd love to see a tour with both of them though.
remember laughing my arse off to "nature feels"
so much music, so little time.
gonna put these on the ipod to let them sink in.
One of the first songs I heard of Nostalgia, Ultra was Nature Feels
and, i think it was just a little hard for me to take the rest seriously after that
Ive given it a few good listens now, and Im feeling it.
Im addicted to Novacane. We All Try and Love Crimes are great.
Letting Channel Orange sink in now.
Super Rich Kids...so true... plenty of them where I come from
Really like Pyramids too
Need some more time for a full review.
Here's a review of Channel Orange from Paste

My only problem is I cant help but wonder if he's really writing these songs for women.
But I like the music enough to convince myself that that is in fact the case.
on another note, this morning i saw that @PearlJamOnline included @frank_ocean in one of their follow friday tweets. thought that was interesting.
nostalgia ultra is pretty much pure genius. the perfect mixtape and well worth all the hype and acclaim it got. Channel orange is a very interesting album. Extremely ambitious, wild. Im extremely blown away by it. The guitar touches added by John mayer are really quite stunning. The change in tempo and vocal style midway into pyramids is my favorite part, and then at the end with those backward guitars and that bell sounding thing to end it off, gorgeous.
Not sure what you mean by him writing the songs for women. He came out, so i think its pretty clear the songs on this record, and on Nostalgia ultra (I dont believe love is between a man and a woman, but between love and love) all point to this fact.
R and B right now is extremely exciting. I do think r and b changed. And that change happened last year. Frank and the Weeknd and The Dream, all are creating lush beautiful music that in my mind is blowing alot of rock and other forms of music out of the water.
Channel orange seems to me to be pushing r and b forward. I dont think you will hear too many albums like it this year. I think this is an album we will be talking about for awhile
