They are very stupid looking. I was thinking about suggesting they are given to the underprivileged instead of burning them ... but I don't even think the underprivileged want to look like that!

    Berets???

They should be burned... not because they were made in China, but because they are so hideous.

Those uniforms were probably bought at China's Outlet Mall (a.k.a. 'Your Local Wal-Mart').

I think he should be criticized for saying that we should burn them. Clothes should be donated to people who can use them.

Outside of that, I really don't care where they were made. I think it's fine to buy stuff made in other countries if that is the stuff you want.

"The USOC is no stranger to controversy over its sponsorships, with questions being raised over why it opted last year to extend BP's sponsorship through the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010.
It was also questioned as early as the 2002 during the Winter Games in Salt Lake City about why American athletes donned berets made by Roots, a Canadian company.
Ralph Lauren has designed uniforms for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, and both times portions of the clothing were manufactured in China, according to previous CNN reports."

Why did everyone wait until this week to check?

    Yeah.

    Donate those.

that's what a bunch of homeless and poverty-level people need... to look like some Steph et Gilles camphor-fetish PanAm flight attendants.

this just reminded me of a scene from wkrp in cincinnati

Venus Flytrap: What do you suppose he's up to?
Dr. Johnny Fever: Carlson? I don't know. You should have been here for the big wig promotion.
    Venus Flytrap: What happened?
Dr. Johnny Fever: Well, naturally, it didn't work, and we ended up with a warehouse full of wigs. Carlson, he couldn't figure out how to get rid of 'em until the Guatemalan earthquake.
    Venus Flytrap: Say what?
Dr. Johnny Fever: Well, the Red Cross called out, you know, for blankets, clothes, anything. So Carlson, out of the goodness of his heart, shipped these destitute earthquake victims in Guatemala three thousand blonde stretch wigs. You know, I still have this picture in my mind of quake victims stumbling through the rubble - all looking like Dolly Parton.

Haha... which is EXACTLY what I was thinking of when I wrote that. That and the rubber sinus mask that Mr. Carlson was wearing that Johnny called "Disco Bondage Headgear."

I disagree. The USOC is privately funded and Congress has no say or influence in what they do. I mean, I wish the unis were made in the USA, but the USOC has to allocate its resources and probably prefers training facilities upgrades over domestically made (i.e. more expensive) uniforms.

If it were, say, a train or stadium subsidized by the federal government, then yeah, we should insist the materials are domestically made.

Agree that the uniforms are hideous, which is probably the real issue here.

That would have been funny if a reporter asked him to take off his blazer and tell us where it was made.

Question: If these uniforms were made in England or Italy, would this be a 'News Item'?

I think Americans still remember US owned and based companys like
RCA and Schwinn that have been sold over seas and it's just a pisser that you have such hard time buying anything that is not made over seas.

Well... if you want to get to the root of it all... it was capitalism that moved well paying jobs from the U.S. to Mexico... then, India and China. Business is in the business of making money... not happiness for its employees. U.S. workers can compete in the global free market... for jobs at the wages that people in India and China are willing to accept.
It's market forces that moved the jobs.

I agree, I'm just saying that people may feel that way especially with the down job market.

I see where you are coming from... but, it is hard to get pissed off when we were the ones doing it to ourselves and knew what we were heading towards... but, were blinded by, "Always The Lowest Price, Always." In other words, we knew that those bargains we were getting at Wal-Mart came with a hidden cost... the cost of U.S. jobs to cheap labor overseas.
    ...
We should have paid closer attention to what those protestors in Seattle were saying back in 1999... although, they were kind of being assholes by rioting and shit. But, the message they were carrying was true... they just really sucked at relaying it.
