I think this is great ! I've been waiting and wondering when this would happen.
I'd like to see it go thru for at least all our nations costal states and possibly nation wide.

I had heard that this was in the works and then forgot about it all.

There are grocery stores here on the east coast, not many, but some... one comes to mind, the discount grocery chain "Aldi" where you can choose to bring your own bags, use their empty boxes (that's what we do...they use stacks of cartons of food rather than shelves in most instances and when a box is empty you can use it for your groceries) or buy plastic bags or paper bags. Still...the plastic bags remain an option, but I think that it wouldn't make a huge difference to most people who shop there if they got rid of that option.

I'd like to see more of it. Plastic handles are more convenient than the paper sacks yes, but the plastic causes a lot of problems. Then again, so does manufacturing paper. HOWEVER, recycled paper is so much less expensive to make and use than it used to be, we should go there for the best results.

and here's an idea. IF...and when and IF EVER growing and/or smoking pot becomes legal, just think of the new businesses(and government in turn) that could profit off of the use of hemp stalk fibers for bags and clothes...the hemp tees and dresses are OH so soft! I know the industry already exists in minutia, but wide spread use of this very very very renewable fiber is not only healthy for the envirnoment but profitable as well. Just an idea.

    Are these statistics still valid?

Plastic bags account for 8 billions pounds of waste in the US each year
Plastic water bottles account for 5 billion pounds of waste in the US each year

Anyone have the most up to date info?

Here in Ireland, we stuck a 22c charge per plastic bag back a few years ago.. Within a year waste due to the bags was cut by 70%
