At the top of my list is a movie you won't see on many lists because it hasn't been released on DVD or video cassette:

"Molière", released in France in 1978, in USA in 1980, written and directed by Ariane Mnouchkine.
    260 minutes.

    Here's the IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077941/

This is a French movie about the life of the play write Jean-Baptiste Poquelin who is known as Molière. It was shown in select theaters in the US for a few months. I saw it twice in a small theater in the Sunset district in San Francisco. Due to the length of the film there was an intermission at each showing. It's truly one of the most amazing films I've ever seen. It was shown briefly on PBS a number of years ago with English speaking dubbed voices- a move that all but ruined the movie. It's a must see in French with English sub-titles. The sound track is fantastic- I'm very fortunate to still have a copy of it on vinyl.

The fact that this film hasn't been released on video or DVD has vexed me for years. It's such a fine movie and a real shame so many have not had the chance to experience it in it's original form.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

Napoleon Dynamite...I know its a sickness, but it just gets funnier every time I watch it
    The Princess Bride
