Freeman: Obama not first black president

Actor Morgan Freeman says the United States has yet to see its "first black president."

"First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him ... they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America," Freeman told NPR. "There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America's first black president hasn't arisen yet. He's not America's first black president — he's America's first mixed-race president."

Freeman, an Obama supporter, added that the president "is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, 'We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he's only going to serve one term.'"

"That means they will not cooperate with him on anything," the Oscar-winning actor said. "So to say he's ineffective is a misappropriation of the facts."

I totally agree, I didn't vote for him the first time around but he will get my vote in the upcoming election. Mainly due to how the Republicans are trying and accomplishing to thwart every single issue, law, program the president wants to implement. That's EVEN if it's an issue the Republicans would want to implement IF they were in office.

I gather they NEVER believed that a so called Black person would ever become President in their lifetime so let's try everything in our power to make him look ineffective while he's in office.

Morgan Freeman is an amazing man. An excellent actor, a bright man, committed to activism and charity work (Grenada Relief Fund, environmental group One Earth, fighting racism). A fine person.

While I love Freeman as much as the rest of you (he's been a favorite actor of mine for a long time), no one has addressed the bolded part of the op.
the president "is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, 'We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he's only going to serve one term.'"

"That means they will not cooperate with him on anything," the Oscar-winning actor said. "So to say he's ineffective is a misappropriation of the facts."

Really, no one has any response to this? It's absolutely accurate, the Republicans stated when he became president that they will in no way allow him to win another term and they have refuses to compromise on anything out of spite. The point of a two party system is the two parties working together for the best interests of the people of this country. Republicans have not only miserably failed in this duty, but they also like to point fingers and say that the scapegoat (Obama) for all of Washington is ineffective, when in fact, they're the ones who are completely ineffective. And that goes for both parties.

It definitely goes for both parties and it clearly demonstrates how broken....and I'd probably say EVIL...our US government has become. It's not working. Nothing is working up there. When will we wake up and do something about it like vote out all incumbents systematically until they start actually doing something.

Good point Jeanwah. I think it's been pointed out in a few other threads how thoroughly Obama has been thwarted during his first term. The two parties definitely have not worked together.
