What is your Grail Guitar

I would love to have a Gibson Les Paul or a PRS Custom 22 or 24, both easily bought in a store.

My grail is an ESP MX-250 explorer in white or black. No longer for sale or in mass production by ESP due to a lawsuit by Gibson. These sell for quite a bit on the secondary market and rarely show up in stores.

What is your grail guitar?

If the "Grail Guitar" is one you quest after, then for me, it's a great buy at a garage sale or pawn shop. Finding a vintage Fender or Gibson for $50, that sort of thing. I love a good buy, and the hunt for something valuable hidden in some junk pile. Some of my favorite gear are items that I got screaming deals on.

The guitar I want most, but will probably never own, would have to be a Tokai Love Rock from the early- to mid-80s, honeyburst or goldtop. I'm also a sucker for 60s-70s Gibson acoustics, would love one of those (especially one owned by the dad of a friend of mine).

The guitars I am most likely to buy (although not necessarily soon) are a Martin GPC-series acoustic/electric and a Gibson ES-339, which are also easily available on the market. Honorable mention goes to some sort of 12-string acoustic, nothing fancy just something to dick around with.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

I kinda already own it, Silverburst Les Paul Custom, but there's always something new popping up

Love the Les Paul Custom in triburst finish. Had it narrowed down to this and silverburst when I bought mine, but it lacked the burst finish on the back of the body, neck, and headstock and only had the dark red, which I'm not a fan of.

Had my eye on Jazzmasters lately(thank you Nels Cline) and I think that'll be my next guitar. Probably gonna go with a Warmoth build and find a really cool custom color.

    Jeez.
A $6000 Gibson "Custom Shop" with "AMAZING" finish.

Or essentially the same guitar with a subdued satin finish,
    for $800?

Unreal that you can get a Gibson Les Paul (ahem, i'm sorry, "studio") for <$1000, handmade in Nashville, these days.
or have i been blind for 10 years?

PS - on topic, i guess - I never really had a "grail guitar". always more star-struck over amps and pedals. Guitars are like "cool to have" but a different flavor a day, for me. Amps are like, "mmmm. i want THISSSS oneeee."
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

Well custom shops are built by hand in memphis. Unlike what comes out of Nashville.

I don't agree with the price at all. That's the breaks. Guys have bought mid 70's deluxes and slapped P90's in them, but I'm not sure I like the deluxes necks or not.

No offense to anyone, but I've never been impressed by Gibson's studio series, or the faded series. Not for the price. The quality on those have never impressed me.

I've seen some good studio's, but that Faded line they have needs to go.

I found a mid 80's Gibson Explorer across the street from the Watergate in DC a few years back. I was young and naive, it was in a beat gibson case that was destroyed. The finish on the guitar was wrecked, all the hardward was rusted and there were chips and dents through out but the neck was straight. I set it down because I felt like a garbage picker, I went back after walking a block away from it and thought I could probably get it restored. A homless man had it after seeing me look at it and said it was his guitar and started getting a little nutty. I regret not grabbing that and walking home with it at lease once a week.
